It’s a potential World Series preview starting Friday night from the Pacific Northwest as the Seattle Mariners – the lone active franchise to never play in a Fall Classic – host the Los Angeles Dodgers with a terrific pitching matchup in the opener. It opened as a pick’em on the MLB odds.

Why Bet on Los Angeles?
The Dodgers could clinch the NL West this weekend for the 10th time in 11 years. A close race at the All-Star break has turned into a rout with Los Angeles pulling away from the Diamondbacks and Giants. Frankly, the Dodgers don’t have a ton to play for the rest of the way as they will be the NL’s No. 2 seed. Stars Freddie Freeman are the first Dodgers 120-run duo since Maury Wills and Tommy Davis in 1962.
After a record-setting August, Betts has hit .233 (7-for-30) with nine walks and three steals over 10 games in September. Overall, he has a .312/.412/.607 slash line with 39 home runs, 103 RBI, 120 runs scored, 37 doubles and a triple over 137 contests. Betts likely will finish as MVP runner-up.
Betts has 12 leadoff homers, leaving him one shy of the all-time single season record for leadoff homers, currently held by Alfonso Soriano, who ripped 13 from the one-hole in 2003. Betts’ 39 homers from the leadoff spot are tied with Soriano (2006) and George Springer (2019) for the most in a single season. In addition, his 103 RBI batting first are tied with Charlie Blackmon (2017) for the most in a single season.
Freeman leads the majors with a career-high 55 doubles and is five from becoming the first MLB player with 60+ doubles since Charlie Gehringer (60) and Joe Medwick (64) in 1936. The All-Star ranks second in the Majors with a career-high 121 runs. Freeman has four four-hit games this year, the most by a Dodger since Raul Mondesi did so in 1996. The Dodger record is nine, set by Wee Willie Keeler in 1901.
It’s young right-hander Bobby Miller (9-3, 3.98) on the hill Friday. Miller came away with a no-decision LAST Saturday in the Dodgers’ 7-6 extra-innings loss to the Nationals, giving up five runs on six hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out eight. The rookie set a new personal best for strikeouts in a start, generating 33 called or swinging strikes on 99 pitches, but he also gave up more than four runs for the first time since June 24. Miller also served up a homer for the fourth straight outing — a two-run shot by Lane Thomas in the seventh inning — and over that stretch he has a 4.78 ERA and 22:6 K:BB through 26.1 innings.
This will be Miller’s first career start vs. Seattle. He is 4-1 with a 3.22 ERA on the road this year.

Why Bet on Seattle?
The Mariners are 62-24 when scoring at least 4 runs and 19-41 when scoring 3-or-fewer. They are 41-30 at T-Mobile Park and 40-35 on the road this season. They already have clinched a 17th .500-or-better season in franchise history.
Seattle could win the AL West, be a wild card team or miss the playoffs entirely. Talented young outfielder Jarred Kelenic missed Wednesday’s win over the Angels due to a sore foot. He was just recently activated off the IL with a broken foot. He is hitting .251 with 11 homers and 45 RBI and is on an eight-game hitting streak dating back several weeks.
On Monday, Julio Rodríguez joined the 30+ home run, 30+ stolen base club, becoming the 2nd Mariners player (Alex Rodriguez, 1998) in team history to join. Julio Rodriguez (30 HR, 36 SB) is the fourth player age 22-or-younger with 30+ home runs and 30+ stolen bases in a season, joining Alex Rodriguez, Mike Trout (2012) & Ronald Acuña Jr. (2019). Julio is 2 RBI away from a 100-RBI season. He would join Alex Rodriguez and Acuña Jr. as the third player age 22-or-younger with a 30/30 season and 100 RBI in the same year. Julio would join Ken Griffey Jr. (2x, 1991-92) and A-Rod (2x, 1996, ’98) as the only Mariners with 100+ RBI in age 22-or-younger seasons.
Shortstop JP Crawford has 53 RBI this season, 1 shy of his career-high 54 he registered during the 2021 season. He has already tallied career-highs in home runs (15) and walks (83) and is on pace to set career-highs in on-base percentage (.378), slugging (.423) and OPS (.799).
It’s stellar right-hander George Kirby (10-9, 3.48) on the mound Friday. Kirby did not factor into the decision during last Friday’s loss, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over 6.1 innings against Tampa Bay. He struck out six. Kirby’s two walks matched his season high, and he has issued only 16 free passes on the season. Since throwing a shutout against the Orioles on Aug. 12, the 25-year-old has allowed at least three earned runs in four straight starts. During those outings, he has a 6.00 ERA and 20 strikeouts over 21 innings.
Kirby had given up a walk in 5 consecutive starts coming into his last outing against Tampa Bay, which was a new career high. His 9.44 SO/BB ratio is the highest this season among qualified starting pitchers. Kirby has never faced the Dodgers and is 6-3 with a 2.87 ERA at home.
