Dodgers Take on White Sox in Clash of Contrasts – Dive into MLB Odds

It’s arguably MLB’s best overall roster against its worst when the Los Angeles Dodgers open a series at the Chicago White Sox on Monday, yet the Pale Hose aren’t huge underdogs on the MLB odds because their young ace, Garrett Crochet, is on the mound. The Dodgers are favored on the MLB odds according to MyBookie Sportsbook.

The Dodgers remain without leadoff hitter and former AL MVP Mookie Betts as he’s one of several players on the injured list. Betts likely won’t return until after the All-Star break due to his fractured wrist. Miguel Rojas has been playing most every day at shortstop with Betts out. Third baseman Max Muncy hasn’t progressed nearly as well as the team hoped since landing on the injured list on May 17, and he was shifted to the 60-day IL, meaning he will now miss at least a couple more months. Muncy has been taking grounders and running at Dodger Stadium, but he has yet to begin swinging a bat or making throws across the diamond.

There was some potential bad news over the weekend as skipper Dave Roberts told reporters that former Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw reported feeling soreness in his left shoulder following a bullpen session earlier in the day. It’s not unusual for a pitcher to feel some soreness as they’re getting stretched out after such a long layoff, but he’ll be monitored closely over the next few days. Roberts noted that it’s possible Kershaw’s next minor league rehab start — scheduled for Tuesday at Triple-A Oklahoma City — will need to be pushed back.

Superstar Shohei Ohtani has been  hitting leadoff with Betts and Ohtani had two massive homers over the weekend and has six 450-foot-plus homers this season, two more than any Dodger in a single season since Statcast began tracking in 2015. Ohtani’s four 450-foot homers in June also have helped him become just the third player since ‘15 to accomplish the feat, joining Trevor Story and Giancarlo Stanton, who both hit five in a month.

“[Ohtani] is leading the league in hitting, leading the league in home runs, he’s right there in runs driven in — it’s pretty special,” said Roberts. “The last few weeks, there just hasn’t been a player better.”

It’s lefty James Paxton on the hill Monday. Paxton (7-1) earned the win over the Rockies last Monday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over seven innings. Paxton gave up a second-inning solo homer but otherwise dominated Colorado hitters, holding them to just one additional hit. The veteran completed seven innings for the first time this season and notched his second consecutive quality start. Paxton also tallied a season-high eight punchouts — three more than his previous top mark in 2024 — and walked just one batter.  He now owns a 3.65 ERA across 66.2 innings this year, striking out 43 hitters with a 1.31 WHIP.

Within his eight strikeouts, Paxton went for a Whiff% of 29 across his three pitch types. He was particularly effective with the knuckle curve, with which he generated whiffs at a 47 percent clip. Rockies hitters were chasing at a 29 percent rate, including a 43 percent mark against the breaking pitch. For the year, Paxton had posted a chase rate of 26.2 percent & a whiff rate of just 7.4 percent prior to Monday’s start.  Velocity was in line with what we’ve seen this year (93.3 MPH average vs. 93.4 average on the year), but he had spin rates up on both the knuckle curve & changeup. Both the fastball & change each featured more break as a result.

There was some uncertainty about Paxton’s role after two recent poor starts given that Bobby Miller (shoulder) is set to return this week, but with back-to-back strong outings and with Yoshinobu Yamamoto (shoulder) set to miss several weeks of action, Paxton’s place in the rotation looks to be secure. He led the majors with 22 walks during April, with a 19.3 percent walk rate that was so far out of line with Paxton’s career norms. But since then, after some mechanical fixes, he has been able to limit the free passes, with just a 6.67-percent walk rate in his last eight starts.

Paxton is 2-0 with a 3.14 ERA in six career appearances vs. the White Sox.

Chicago White Sox Betting Lines +122

The White Sox are truly horrific but their lineup got a bit better on Sunday with the activation of DH Eloy Jimenez off the injured list. Jimenez, 27, injured his hamstring while running the bases May 21 and missed 29 games. In April, he was out for 12 games with an adductor strain. He is hitting .231 with five homers and 12 RBIs in 36 games this season. In a corresponding move, the White Sox optioned outfielder Oscar Colas to Triple-A Charlotte. Colas, 25, has batted .273/.368/.273 with no homers and four RBI in 13 games over two stints with the Sox in 2024.

Star outfielder Luis Robert Jr. got Sunday off but simply for rest to manage his workload in the wake of his return from the IL with a hip flexor strain. Manager Pedro Grifol said he saw video Friday of injured third baseman Yoan Moncada running and “he looks great,” he said. “Running really good, running the bases really good.”

“He’s doing everything except playing right now. He’s going to start playing hopefully by the middle or end of this week.” Grifol said Moncada probably won’t return to White Sox until after the All-Star break, which is July 15-18.

It’s ace lefty Garrett Crochet on the mound Monday. Crochet (6-6) took the loss against Houston last Wednesday, allowing three runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over six innings. Crochet racked up a hearty 19 whiffs and eight punchouts, but it wasn’t enough to keep him out of the loss column in a contest during which he was supported with just one run. The three earned runs were the most he has allowed since April 24. Crochet has tallied six consecutive quality starts and is tied for 10th in the majors with 10 total on the campaign. He has a 3.25 ERA and 0.95 WHIP through 88.2 innings.

Crochet leads MLB with an average of 12.59 strikeouts per 9.0 IP and ranks second with 124 strikeouts, the most by a White Sox pitcher in his first 16 career starts. He is just the second MLB pitcher since at least 1901 to record 120-plus strikeouts with 20 walks or less over his first 16 career starts, joining the Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka (127 SO/18 BB) in 2014. The 124 strikeouts already are the ninth-highest total in franchise history before the All-Star Break, just 33 behind the mark of 157 set by Chris Sale in 2015;

Crochet has struck out 10-plus five times this season (career-high 13 on 6/13 at Seattle), tied with the Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow for the MLB lead. He is 3-2 with a 1.86 ERA (6 ER/29.0 IP), 46 strikeouts (14.3 per 9.0 IP) and a 1.03 WHIP over his last five home starts. The White Sox are 7-9 in his starts this season (14-49 otherwise) and Crochet owns a 0.84 ERA (3 ER/43.0 IP) in the seven team wins he has started.

The White Sox are 8-33 on the road in 2024, the worst record in MLB and worst 41-game start in franchise history. The Sox lost 14 of their first 15 road games this season and have dropped 17 of their last 21. The Sox lead the all-time series against the Dodgers, 16-15, but have gone 2-8 since 2017. The Dodgers won two of three games at home in 2023 and in Chicago in 2022.

Why Bet on LA Dodgers?

Trea Turner went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday’s loss to the Mets, a day after his 26-game hitting streak ended. Three batters into the bottom of the first, Turner ambushed a first-pitch curveball from Trevor Williams and sent a two-run home run to left field. The star shortstop has recorded a hit in 46 of his first 54 games.

Max Muncy (elbow) went 1-for-3 with a walk Sunday in a minor league rehab game for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Muncy started at second base and played all nine innings. The 31-year-old infielder appears poised to return to the Dodgers’ lineup at some point this week.

It’s Mitch White (1-1, 4.79) on the mound and he’s only in the rotation due to injuries. White didn’t factor in the decision against Pittsburgh last Wednesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven across five innings. White gave up a run in the first inning but wasn’t tagged again until Bryan Reynolds got to him for a two-run homer in the fifth.

The right-hander didn’t give up any other extra-base hits in the contest and notched a season-high seven strikeouts, but he had to settle for a no-decision. White’s time in the starting rotation could be running short with Clayton Kershaw (pelvis) and Andrew Heaney (shoulder) getting closer to returns. After an abbreviated spring training and a long stint on the COVID-19 injured list, White is finally built up to pitch five innings.

“As far as the whole body of work, it’s really good,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of White. “He’s a four-pitch guy. I love the head. I love the pulse. He’s built up to five (innings) and 75 (pitches), can give us some length. He’s a confident pitcher right now.”

The outing followed a scoreless effort in his last start against the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 26. “Oh, definitely. Yeah,” White answered when asked if he has been able to build off his last few appearances.

“I mean, in terms of all the stuff I’ve been working on with Mark (Prior) and Connor (McGuiness), our pitching coaches, everything kind of came together better. Obviously it wasn’t perfect, but we’re getting there.”

The Dodgers optioned White to Triple-A, and called him back up, 10 times each last season. To do so this year would be illegal. One mandate of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement holds that players can only be optioned to the minor leagues five times in a single season before outright assignment waivers are required.

Why Bet on Chicago White Sox?

The White Sox have won two straight following a 6-5 win at Tampa Bay on Sunday. The White Sox, who collected a season-high 16 hits, battered Rays starter Ryan Yarbrough for 10 baserunners and five doubles in their first 15 plate appearances while mounting a 6-0 advantage in the second inning.

Aaron Bummer surrendered a two-out single in the seventh to Yandy Díaz, but Díaz was picked off. Kendall Graveman struck out the side in the eighth, and Liam Hendriks retired the Rays 1-2-3 in the ninth for his 16th save.

Andrew Vaughn went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI Sunday. Vaughn has five doubles and two homers in his last 11 games. Luis Robert went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI on Sunday. It was Robert’s third multi-hit game in his last four starts, helping bring his average up to .296 across 166 plate appearances for the campaign. Robert has also provided 22 runs scored, 20 RBI and seven steals. Jake Burger went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored Sunday. He has delivered four extra-base hits in his last four starts and is challenging Gavin Sheets for playing time as designated hitter.

All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson did some on-field running on Sunday prior to the White Sox’ game against the Rays.  Anderson has been receiving treatment on his injured right groin and ran at least one sprint, although not at full speed, in the outfield prior to Sunday’s series finale in Tampa Bay. There isn’t a definitive timetable for his return yet, but he’s expected back at some point later this month.

It’s right-hander Michael Kopech (1-2) on the mound Tuesday. Kopech (1-2) took the loss last Wednesday, allowing five runs on six hits and four walks over three innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out four. After tossing seven scoreless innings against the Yankees on May 22, the White Sox opted to give the right-hander extra rest heading into Wednesday’s matchup. However, Kopech appeared rusty and allowed runs in all three innings he pitched, including a three-run homer to Danny Jansen in the bottom of the third. Despite the poor start, Kopech still sports a 2.20 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP and has 43 strikeouts across 45.0 innings.

Kopech has gone 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA (8 ER/16.0 IP), 13 strikeouts, 10 walks and a .143 (8-56) opponents’ average over his last three starts. This will be his first career appearance against the Dodgers. Kopech has not allowed a run over 16.1 IP in 10 career interleague appearances (one start).

The Dodgers swept all four games in the last season series in 2017 (7/18-19 in Chicago; 8/15-16 at Dodger Stadium). Los Angeles outscored the White Sox by a 21-6 margin. The Sox last won a series over the Dodgers from 6/2-4/14. The White Sox lead the all-time series, 14-11, going 7-4 at Guaranteed Rate Field and 7-7 at Dodger Stadium.

Expert Prediction: White Sox 4, Dodgers 3
