Pitching Matchup

The New York Yankees plan to send RHP Clarke Schmidt to the mound on Thursday for his second start of 2023. He started against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday and took a no-decision in the Yankees’ 7-5 loss. Schmidt allowed three runs on five hits over 3.1 innings with two homers allowed and five strikeouts.

Last year Schmidt mostly worked out of the bullpen, posting a 5-5 record and a 3.12 ERA in 29 games. He faced the Orioles four times with a 0.00 ERA over 8.1 innings. Schmidt struck out four, walked five, and gave up two hits.

The Orioles will counter with RHP Dean Kremer.  The 27-year-old started on Saturday in a 9-8 loss at Boston and took a no-decision. Kremer allowed five runs on six hits over three innings while giving up two homers and striking out three.

Last season Kremer was 8-7 with a 3.23 ERA in 21 starts while striking out 87 batters in 125 innings. Kremer lost to the Yankees 6-0 on July 24 last season as he gave up four runs on five hits over 5.1 innings while striking out six. He gave up a home run to Aaron Judge and a double to DJ Lemahieu.

Offenses Hit or Miss

The Yankees have scored 25 runs in the first five games. Judge is off to a .350 start with two homers and four RBI, while Gleyber Torres also has two home runs to go with a .333 average.

On the down side, Josh Donaldson is batting .132 on the young season, and Aaron Hicks is    hitless. Giancarlo Stanton is batting .200, and two of his four hits are home runs.

The Baltimore Orioles have also scored 25 runs on the season with nine home runs in five games. Ryan Mountcastle, Cedric Mullins, and Jorge Mateo all have two home runs and at least five RBI. Catcher Adley Rutschman had five hits on the opening day and is batting .333 to lead the team.

Batting Analysis

When the odds come out, expect the Yankees to be favored. Neither starting pitcher is that experienced, and both struggled on Saturday in their first start of the season. Overall the Yankees have a better pitching staff with a team ERA of 2.00 to the Orioles’ 6.23 team ERA.

The Yankees also have the better overall offense and have committed only one error on the season. Add in their recent domination of the Orioles, and they are the pick to win on Thursday, even if Baltimore gets a home opener bump from an enthusiastic crowd.
