WRC 2021 Rally de Catalunya Betting Analysis & Prediction

Written by on October 14, 2021

There are now just 2 races left in the 2021 WRC season and a championship race that looked to be done is now still alive and well. That said, Sebastien Ogier, who has the lead, still has the upper hand and it will take some magic from the chasing pack for him to be caught. This weekend, the drivers will be in Spain for the Rally de Espana, where Ogier could potentially wrap things up. There really is only one driver who can catch him at this stage of the season, so Ogier might not even need to get the win to do enough to clinch another championship. Let’s take a look at the current top 4 so you can get ready to bet against the WRC odds for the Rally de Catalunya.

Sebastien Ogier

Ogier is in a familiar place in the overall driving standings, sitting in 1st and about as close to his 9th world title in 10 years as it gets. After winning 4 of the first 6 races this season, Ogier has gone into a bit of a slump, only managing to get on the podium once in the last 4 races. He has still managed to accrue 190 points on the season, which is fewer points than he is used to. Skipping a shortened 2020, the lowest number of points Ogier accrued to win a championship was 219, so he still has work to do to win again. He does have 3 wins in Spain, but he has not won there since 2016.

Elfyn Evans

The Welshman made things interesting in the last race by getting the win in Finland and picking up 30 points in the process. In total, he made up 20 points on Ogier, who finished 5th in Finland, and is now 36 points out of first. You don’t need to be a math major to see that he needs to match what he did in the Finnish Rally to steal the win. Realistically, though, it does look as though he is going to need to settle for 2nd place overall, just as he did last season. His best finish in this rally was 3rd back in 2018.

Thierry Neuville

While Evans kept his title chances alive with the win in Finland, Neuville basically saw his challenge come to an end. He was forced to retire in that race, which meant zero points were added to his total. That leaves him on 130 points, which is 36 back of Evans in 2nd place. He can still play the role of spoiler here and it is worth noting that he won the Spanish Rally in 2019, which was the last time it was run. He already has 1 win on the season, with that one coming in Belgium.

Kalle Rovanpera

It did look for a minute as though Rovanpera was going to make a late push this season, as he went through a 3-race run where he won twice and took a 3rd place finish in the other. The wheels came off in Finland, though, where he finished 34th and failed to pick up a single point. Realistically, 3rd overall looks like the best he can hope for this season.
