Last Season

Georgia was a 44-21 winner over the Vols last year. After trailing the Volunteers 21-17 at halftime, the Bulldogs came out in the second half and shutout Tennessee 27-0 in the second half of the game. It was the second year in a row that Georgia blanked UT in the second half. The Bulldogs’ defense overall held the Vols to -1 rushing yards and 214 total yards and had five sacks and forced three fumbles with an interception. UGA QB quarterback Stetson Bennett completed 16-of-27 passes for 238 total yards with two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown.

UGA leads the all-time series with UT 25-23-2. The series dates back to 1899. The 2019 victory marked the first time the Bulldogs broke a tie to take a series lead over UT since 1981 when it went up 9-8-2.

Why Bet on Georgia?

Georgia (9-0) routed Missouri 43-6 last week. Stetson Bennett threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, and Georgia’s offense amassed 505 total yards. Missouri actually led 3-0 with about six minutes left in the first quarter. It was just the second time all season that Georgia has trailed. The only other time was when Auburn took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on Oct. 9, and the Bulldogs won that game 34-10.

Bennett has played in eight games (six starts) and is 80-for-120 (66.7 percent) for 1,412 yards with 14 touchdown passes and four interceptions. He has 27 carries for 193 yards. Bennett is 6-0 as a starter this year and is 9-2 in his Bulldog career.

Georgia now has held eight of its nine opponents to their lowest scoring tally of year (USC is the exception). The 59 points allowed through nine games is the lowest in a season at this point since 1971 (53 points). Georgia opponents have scored just 59 points in 2021. That nine-game tally is the lowest since 1971 when the Bulldogs had allowed 53 through nine contests.

Georgia leads the nation in Scoring Defense giving up just 6.6 points per game. The Bulldogs are averaging 38.4 points per game, which is ranked 14th nationally. Tennessee is averaging 38. 2 ppg, which trails only Alabama and Georgia from the SEC.

One of UGA’s best defenders, linebacker Adam Anderson, has been suspended after being charged with felony rape. At the time of his suspension, he led the Bulldogs with five sacks, and was second on the team with 5.5 tackles for loss to go with 32 tackles and 14 quarterback hurries.

While the Bulldogs have already clinched the league’s Eastern Division, they are aiming to go a perfect 8-0 in the league for the first time in school history. Georgia has gone a perfect 6-0 in the SEC East two times (2017-18) under Kirby Smart. Since 2017, the Bulldogs are 26-2 against teams from the East.

Why Bet on Tennessee?

The Vols (5-4) would get bowl eligible with a win. The knocked off No. 18 Kentucky 45-42 last week. Quarterback Hendon Hooker had a career night, completing 15-of-20 passes for a career-high 316 yards and four touchdowns. Hooker was the first UT quarterback to throw four touchdowns in a game since Joshua Dobbs did so against Florida on Sept. 24, 2016.

Hooker completed two throws of 70+ yards, marking the first time since at least 2000 that the Vols posted two offensive plays of 70 or more yards in the same game. The SEC’s most efficient QB improved his 2021 passer rating to 190.00 after entering the night with a league-best 179.92.

Tennessee scored on its first play from scrimmage, a 75-yard pass from Hooker to JaVonta Payton. It is the second time this season UT found the end zone on its first offensive play of the game. The last was a two-yard rush by Jabari Small against Pitt on Sept. 11, 2021.

It was the first time in Kentucky history the Wildcats had scored at least 41 points in a regulation game and lost. UK had been 119-0 when the Wildcats scored at least 41 points in regulation.

With 344 points, Tennessee has already eclipsed its final point total from the four previous seasons. That tally is the most through the first nine games of a season at UT since the 1995 team (26 years ago) scored 365 through its first nine games. The Vols’ 344 points rank 15th in the FBS and third in the SEC.

Saturday’s contest will mark Tennessee’s fourth consecutive game vs. a top 20 opponent and kicks off a three-game homestand to close the regular season. The Vols are 74-19-3 all-time in Homecoming contests, and it will be Tennessee’s first Homecoming game vs. an SEC foe since Auburn in 2013.

Josh Heupel is vying to become just the third UT head coach in the past 50 years to tally a .500 record or better in SEC play in his first season, joining Lane Kiffin (4-4 in 2009) and Phillip Fulmer (7-1 in 1993).
