While there are no divisions in the ACC this year, usually there are and Miami and NC State are in opposite ones so they don’t play all that often. They haven’t since a Miami 27-13 win in Raleigh late in the 2016 campaign.

Friday’s game vs. NC State is the 16th matchup in the history of the series; UM leads the series 9-5-1, including a 3-1 lead in games in Raleigh. Since joining the ACC, the Hurricanes have won three of five meetings vs. NC State (2004, 2012, 2016), with its two losses coming in 2007 and 2008.

The Hurricanes (5-1) has been off since a hard-fought 19-14 home win over Virginia on Oct. 24. Senior receiver Mike Harley had a career-best 10 catches for a career-most 170 yards and a touchdown. The 10 catches were tied for second-most by a Hurricane since Miami joined the ACC, while his 170 receiving yards were the most by a UM player since Phillip Dorsett posted 201 yards in 2014 vs. Arkansas State.

QB D’Eriq King finished the game completing 21-of-30 passes for 322 yards and a touchdown. King, who has picked up ACC Quarterback of the Week honors two times this year, has thrown for 1,401 yards and 11 touchdowns this season while adding 301 rushing yards and two rushing scores.

The Cavaliers arrived at Hard Rock Stadium a desperate team looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Virginia had held Miami to fewer than 20 points in each of their last two meetings, games decided by a combined 14 points.

Miami tight end Brevin Jordan is back to full strength after missing time due to a shoulder injury. Jordan has not appeared in a game since he injured his shoulder during the Hurricanes’ October 10 loss at Clemson. With the junior sidelined for wins over Pitt and Virginia fellow junior Will Mallory ascended into the starting role, and he caught four passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns in those games.

The Hurricanes, who ranked No. 4 in FBS and led the ACC with an average of 8.3 tackles for loss per game last year (108 total), are tied for 10th in FBS with an average of 8.5 TFLs per game this fall. Miami leads the ACC and ranks No. 22 nationally in red zone defense, holding teams to a .760 scoring clip inside the red zone. No active player in FBS has more career sacks than DE Quincy Roche, who has totaled 28.5 during his playing career. The next highest active total is 23.5.

Miami head coach Manny Diaz spent six years on the Wolfpack staff under head coach Chuck Amato (2000-05).

The Wolfpack (4-2) also were last in action on Oct. 24 and lost to then-No. 14 North Carolina 48-21. UNC jumped out to a 14-0 lead with a first quarter score (16-yd TD run) followed by another TD three minutes into the second quarter (10-yd TD run).

The Pack made the QB change to freshman Ben Finley after that second scoring drive and in his two drives, Finley helped the offense to 146 of its 175 yards of first half offense in his two drives. Starter Bailey Hockman would eventually re-enter.

Finley was 13-20 for 143 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The Pack’s 358 yards passing were the most for a Pack team since the 2018 regular season finale against East Carolina (421). Dave Doeren says that Hockman is the starting quarterback, but that there is “always opportunities to have plays” for Finley.

Through his 11 total games played at NC State, Hockman has a 56.9 completion percentage, 1,077 passing yards with four touchdowns and eight interceptions through the air. He’s also added two rushing touchdowns this year, but has -10 yards rushing on his career due to taking sacks.
