Updated AP Top 25 College Football Poll: Do They Match with the Odds to Win the Championship?

Earlier last week, the first Associated Press Top 25 College Football Poll came out.

It is always interesting to look at when you start the season and then, of course, at the end of the season as well. At the beginning of the season, it’s fun to look at it and compare it to the odds of winning the National title.

Comparing the odds to win a national championship against the final Associated Press poll from the 2022 season, the 2023 poll won’t come out until the end of the summer, will show how teams did in the eyes of bookmakers. There is little surprise in the teams on top.

Georgia Bulldogs

CFB National Championship Odds: +218

The Bulldogs appear to be the top pick by pretty much everyone in the 2023 College Football season. They led the Coaches Poll; now they are atop the Associated Press poll.

Regarding the Odds of winning the Championship, the Bulldogs are listed at +218 as the biggest favorite. The next best odds are +560, so a big favorite they are.

Michigan Wolverines

CFB National Championship Odds: +870

There is a little difference here. The Michigan Wolverines, who will be without their head coach for the first three games of the season, come into the Associated Press poll at 2. They are also #2 in the Coaches Poll. When it comes to betting odds to win the national title, though, they actually have the fourth-best odds.

So, while there is not much difference, the oddsmakers are giving a pair of other teams a better chance to take it down.

Ohio State Buckeyes

CFB National Championship Odds: +690

Ryan Day and his Buckeyes were oh so close to getting into the title game a season ago. The Buckeyes have unfinished business to do. Their spot in the Associated Press Poll and their odds match completely.

Ohio State is third in the poll and has the third-best odds. Ohio State starts the season at +690 to win it all.

Alabama Crimson Tide

CFB National Championship Odds: +560

Here is where the other difference comes in. The Associated Press poll has the Crimson Tide at #4. The Coaches Poll has the Crimson Tide at 3, ahead of Ohio State.

Regarding betting odds to win the national title – the Crimson Tide have the second-best odds. Alabama is only behind Georgia. The oddsmakers appear to like the SEC more than the Big Ten here, which makes sense based on past results. The Crimson Tide is listed at +560.

LSU Tigers

CFB National Championship Odds: +1325

Brian Kelly and his Tigers come into the season as the fifth-best team in the country. The Tigers will get tested right away as they get a Top 10 team on a neutral site to start the season.

LSU and Florida State will likely be a thriller. Anyways, the Tigers are listed at +1325 to win the title, which is the fifth-best odds.

CFB National Championship Odds: +1425

Lincoln Riley, Caleb Williams, and the entire gang in Pasadena feel they have a legitimate shot at winning it all in 2023. The Trojans will need to be better defensive if they are going to do so.

USC is 6th in the Associated Press poll and the Coaches Poll and also has the sixth-best odds. The Trojans are listed at +1425.

While James Franklin’s team is the third Big Ten team in the Top 7 of the Associated Press poll, they are tied for 8th in betting odds. Clemson sneaks ahead of them in betting odds. They are tied with Florida State at +2100 odds to win it all.

CFB National Championship Odds: +2100

The Seminoles and Tigers are playing for a chance to move up into the Top 5 as the season goes along.

A big win in Orlando will have either team knocking on the door of a College Football Playoff berth, obviously, as long as business is taken care of all season. The Seminoles are +2100 to win the title.
