Favorite
The current favorite remains the Colorado Avalanche, who have been the favorites since the preseason. The reigning Stanley Cup champions have been hit with the injury bug with major players like Gabriel Landeskog, Valeri Nichushkin, and, most recently,
Nathan MacKinnon. With MacKinnon out for the rest of the year, the only big-name players left to help are Cale Makar and Mikko Rantanen. The Avalanche are currently holding the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference and fourth in the Central Division with 27 points which is six behind first place.
Despite their long list of injuries this year, the Avalanche are staying in games, and once they are at full strength again will remain a strong team to play against.
Smart Pick
Currently the second-best team in the entire NHL based on points, the Boston Bruins have been dominant this year and have only been better since the return of Brad Marchand and Charlie McAvoy, who started the season with injuries.
The Bruins are currently holding a 20-3-1 record which is the best in the Atlantic Division and second best in the Eastern Conference, and have been one of the toughest teams to play against every night.
They are especially dangerous at home, where they have lost just one of their 14 games. With a potential last run with their older team, the Bruins are a team to continue watching as they could go deep into the playoffs.
Long Shot
Since they are still only 13th on this list and have been slowly moving down this list, the New York Rangers are a good long-shot team to keep an eye on. This team finished their 2021-22 season by getting knocked out in the Eastern Conference finals but has struggled to find that same magic as they currently sit outside of a Wild Card spot and are fifth in the Metropolitan Division with 29 points.
Their Vezina-winning goalie has been a big part of that struggle with a slower-than-expected start but hopefully will get back on the right track. He is rumored to be a team to trade for Patrick Kane; betting the Rangers could be smart, as those odds will definitely change if he comes to this team.
