Bayern showed again why it’s one of the greatest soccer clubs in history. Although Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Mueller and the rest failed to defend their 2020 Champions League title, Bayern won a ninth straight, and thirtieth Bundesliga title with more than ten days left in the season. Check out how Bayern won the Bundesliga so fast as well as what we can look forward to in Bayern’s last two matches so you can bet against their Bundesliga odds.

Bundesliga Champion: Bayern Notches Ninth Straight Title

2020-2021 Bundesliga Season

  • When: Sep. 8, 2020 – May 22, 2021

How did Bayern lock up the Bundesliga title before May 10?

Domination. That’s the word to use. Bayern lost 4 matches while drawing in 5. Of the 32 games it took Bayern to win the title, the masterful club squad won 23.

The goal differential is astounding. Leipzig scored 26 goals in 32 matches. Wolfsburg and Dortmund each scored 25. Bayern’s total in 32 games? 52 goals.

Most of those goals flew into the net from the end of Robert Lewandowski’s foot. As of May 11, Lewandowski has scored 39 goals.

We’ll get to Lewandowski later on in the blog. For now, realize that the 2020-2021 Bayern Munich team, even though it failed to win the Champions League, is one of the most dominant in Bundesliga history.

Highlights from the 2020 – 2021 Bundesliga Season

The biggest highlight happened on May 8 in Bayern’s stunning 6-0 victory against rival Monchengladbach. Lewandowski scored 3 goals.

Thomas Mueller scored. So did Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sane. All four players looked Monchengladbach in the eye and decided to win the season in a single, grand swoop.

Other highlights include Mainz upsetting Bayern on April 24 and Bayern dominating Erling Haaland and Dortmund 4-2 on March 6.

We can add Bayern’s 4-0 beat down of Stuttgart on March 20. We should also give a shout out to the teams that beat mighty Bayern during the season.

In addition to Mainz, Bayern fell by 3 goals to Hoffenheim on Sep. 27. Frankfurt beat Bayern 2-1 on February 20 and Gladbach upset Bayern 3-2 on Jan. 8.

What should we look forward to in the final couple of Bundesliga weeks?

Like we wrote above, Robert Lewandowski is sitting on 39 goals. The Bundesliga record for most goals in a season is 40.

Gerd Mueller, playing for Bayern Munich, set the record in the 1971 – 1972 season. Bayern plays two more matches, against Freiburg on May 15 and versus Augsburg on May 22.

Lewandowski has a great chance of crushing Mueller’s record. He should at least tie it with a goal against Freiburg or Augsburg. If he completes a hat trick in either match, like he did versus Monchengladbach, the record will fall.

Also, Lewandowski is twenty-seven years old. He’s around 90 goals away from tying Gerd Mueller for the most goals in Bundesliga history. Unless injury derails his career, Robert Lewandowski should easily grab the record.
