Free up Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema is on another level. A France national team superstar, Benzema is playing out of his mind. Benzema even scored a goal versus Levante in Real’s impressive 6-0 beating of their LaLiga rival on May 12.

No doubt, Benzema is the reason Real got past EPL champ Manchester City. Facing a 4-3 deficit in the second leg, Benzema scored two goals in extra time to push the final score to 3-1, sending the Citizens back to Manchester and out of the Champions League.

If Real has any shot of beating Liverpool, they must free up their best attacking player.

Be as aggressive as possible

Real’s defense isn’t as talented as Liverpool’s. There is no Virgil Van Djik roaming the backline ready to shut down Pool’s attack.

Because Real doesn’t play defense as well, El Blanco must be ultra-aggressive. Yes, there’s a chance Liverpool counters, but Real has shown they don’t mind winning an over the total match and sitting back and trying to prevent Mane and Salah from scoring is a recipe for disaster.

Force Liverpool’s midfield to play defense

Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara are two of the top midfielders in any UEFA league. Thiago might be playing the best soccer of his career.

If Real doesn’t force both to play defense, things will go south in a hurry. El Blanco must force Thiago and Mane to expend energy on D. Doing so takes away from their ability to create in Liverpool’s attack.

Throw caution to the wind

Carlo Ancelotti has coached Real Madrid to the verge of a Champions League Final by not pretending his team is something it isn’t. In LaLiga, Real plays excellent defense.

But versus the best from the Premier League, Real has had to push the attack and try to outscore their opponents. Real knocked out Chelsea with a 3-2 victory in the second leg.

In their first leg match versus Man City, Real scored 3 goals in a 4-3 loss. Then in the second leg, Benzema provided his usual brand of magic in extra time for the 3-1 victory.

It’s not that Real doesn’t play defense. It’s that Ancelotti understands his team’s best chance of winning is to have an aggressive attack, throw caution to the wind, and free up Benzema to dominate.

If Real does those things, they will have a chance to upset Liverpool and win the Champions League title.
