This Saturday, England and Spain do battle at Adjarabet Arena in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final. The next generation of European soccer stars has put on a show in Georgia and Romania, and this weekend’s final in Batumi promises to be a fitting finale.

England has been faultless in the tournament so far. They eased into the knockout stage with a hat-trick of 2-0 Group C wins. After victories over Czech Republic and Israel, the Young Lions beat rivals Germany in the final group game to end with nine points from a possible nine.

Spain finished top of Group B after two wins and a draw. They hammered co-host Romania in game one before edging past Croatia on matchday two. With qualification to the knockout phase already assured, Spain battled to a 2-2 draw with Ukraine in the last group match.

The Road to the Finals

Both England and Spain have impressed during the knockout stage of the European Championship. In the quarter-finals, the English secured a narrow victory over Portugal at Ramaz Shengelia Stadium in Kutaisi.

Newcastle United man Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game.

Spain needed extra time to see off Switzerland in their quarter-final. The Swiss forced extra time with a 91st-minute equalizer, but the Little Red One got over the line in Bucharest thanks to Juan Miranda’s goal in the 103rd minute.

The quarter-finals were tight, but both England and Spain made light work of their opponents in the semi-finals. England went up against Israel again and sealed a comfortable 3-0 victory in Batumi. Morgan Gibbs-White, Cole Palmer and Cameron Archer got the goals.

Spain may have drawn with the Ukrainians in the group stage, but Santi Denia’s troops thumped Ukraine in the semi in Bucharest. They fell behind after just 13 minutes, but efforts from Abel Ruiz, Oihan Sancet, Antonio Blanco, Aimar Oroz and Sergio Gomez gave Spain a resounding 5-1 win.

The Best Two Teams of The Tournament

These two teams have by far been the best two nations in the tournament, and both fully warrant a place in this weekend’s showpiece final. On paper, the pair seem evenly matched, but there must be a winner in Batumi.

This will be the fifth meeting between the two countries at under-21 level, with the last of those coming in the group stage of the 2011 European Championship. That one ended in a 1-1 tie.

Lee Carsley’s England has been outstanding in this tournament, scoring ten and conceding none. Spain will no doubt be tough opponents, but the Young Lions could edge it.
