Roger Federer Withdraws from 2021 Western & Southern Open

If you were looking to bet on Roger Federer to win his eighth Western & Southern Open title, you will, unfortunately, not be able to. The tournament organizers announced that the Swiss has withdrawn from the event due to a knee injury on Thursday, August 5.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion, Federer, would enter the 2021 Western & Southern Open as the winningest player at the tournament, where he has recorded a 47-10 record and has won seven titles across the last 15 years.

The Swiss tennis star won his first Western & Southern Open title in 2005, to which he added six more across the next ten years. That includes two successful title defenses in 2010 and 2015.

Federer came close to adding his eighth title in 2018, when he reached the finals, but lost to Novak Djokovic with 4-6, 4-6. In 2019, Federer made it to R3, where he lost to Andrey Rublev (3-6, 4-6). In 2020, the Swiss did not attend the tournament.

Six Former Champions In The Field

The 2021 Western & Southern Open field will feature six tennis players who had previously won the tournament. That includes two-time champions in Novak Djokovic (2018, 2020), Andy Murray (2008, 2011), as well as Daniil Medvedev (2019), Grigor Dimitrov (2017), Marin Cilic (2016), and Rafael Nadal (2013).

Out of that group of players, all eyes will be on Novak Djokovic, who travels to Ohio as the most successful tennis player of the year. He has already won the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon and is now chasing the Grand Slam at the US Open.

Despite his impressive form over the season, Djokovic did not deliver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he finished fourth, after losing to Pablo Carreno Busta (4-6, 7-6, 3-6) in the bronze medal match.

Can Djokovic Go Back-To-Back?

Having already won the tournament in 2020, Novak Djokovic will now chase his second consecutive title at the 2021 Western & Southern Open – a feat that only four players before him managed to achieve during the Open Era: Mats Wilander (1983-1984), Michael Chang (1993-1994), Andre Agassi (1995-1996), Roger Federer (2009-2010, 2014-2015).

Djokovic definitely has the tools to do so, but since he is priced as the betting favorite, it is far less appealing to back him on the ATP outright markets. Instead, we like Daniil Medvedev, who has been in great form this season and has already won here before.

Medvedev has reached the finals of the 2021 Australian Open and quarter-finals of the 2021 French open. Although he has – like Djokovic – underperformed in Japan, Medvedev usually does well on hard courts.

Novak Djokovic decided to withdraw from the tournament, stating that he needs more time to recover from the Australian to Tokyo journey. Instead of traveling to Lindner Family Tennis Center, the current no.1 in the world will instead rest up and get ready for the 2021 US Open.

Two Players To Watch Out For

Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev is the bookmaker’s favorite to win the 2021 Western & Southern Open, and rightfully so. He has already won the Mallorca Championship and has done well throughout the season.

One could quickly point out Medvedev’s disappointing performance at the 2021 Wimbledon, where he crashed out from R4. While a painful exit, we have to remember that Medvedev reached the quarter-finals at the 2021 French Open and finals at the 2021 Australian Open.

There is a good reason why Medvedev is expected to win the 2021 Western & Southern Open, and while his road to the finals won’t be easy, this is still his golden opportunity to claim silverware in the absence of Novak Djokovic, and we can be sure Medvedev will grab the chance with both hands.

Medvedev enters the tournament with an excellent hard-court record. He has played 21 games on this surface over the year, won all but three 19/3, and is 33/7 across the last two seasons.

His only three hard court losses on the year happened against Djokovic, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Pablo Carreno-Busta.

Matteo Berrettini

World no.8, Matteo Berrettini enters the 2021 Western & Southern Open as the fifth seed and is a strong candidate to claim the trophy for himself. The Italian has been out of action for the past month and has missed the Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to an injury. However, he is now back, ready to compete for silverware.

The 25-year-old has played some fantastic tennis over the season and has already won two singles titles. His total tally would be much higher if not for Novak Djokovic, who beat him in the quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open and in the Wimbledon finals. 

While Berrettini hasn’t won any of the two Grand Slams, there is no shame in getting eliminated by the current no.1.

Like Medvedev, Berrettini will see the Cincinnati Masters as an opportunity to claim the title in the absence of Djokovic, who has denied him his first Grand Slam title in July. Seeing Berrettini priced as one of the underdogs despite his success over the season makes him a great value bet.

Berrettini’s record on hard courts isn’t as flashy as Medveved’s; however, he has played fewer games. The Italian played 11 hard court matches in 2021 and won all but three – against Alexander Bublik, Daniil Medvedev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Regardless, those three defeats happened in January-February, and Berrettini has since looked improved. It won’t be easy, but Berrettini looks set for a deep run at the 2021 Western & Southern Open.

Borna Coric is the defending champion, having beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in last year’s final. Alexander Zverev won in 2021, beating Andrey Rublev in the final.

Novak Djokovic won his second title in Cincinnati in 2020. Other past winners include Daniil Medvedev (2019) and Grigor Dimitrov (2016). Roger Federer, Andy Murray, and Rafael Nadal were the only players to win the event from 2007 to 2015.

A Look at the Draw

With a 56-player field, the top eight seeds receive draws into the second round. In the top half of the draw, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, Tsitsipas, and Rublev are all automatically through to the second round, while Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune are all through in the bottom half. That means the draw stacks up with a potential Alcaraz-Djokovic showdown in the finals.

Cincinnati Masters First-Round Bets

Alex de Minaur (-188) vs. J.J. Wolf (+150)

This is one worth keeping an eye on as it’s possible Alex de Minaur could be a late withdrawal considering he’s into the finals at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada, on Sunday and would have to play in consecutive days. If he does play, however, he should be able to carry his momentum from Canada onto the hard courts in Cincinnati.

De Minaur has struggled this year, at least based on expectations, but is 9-1 in his last ten matches and proving himself as a legitimate contender for the US Open. He’s 1-0 in his career against J.J. Wolf, who has lost two matches in a row and is just 11-9 on outdoor hard court this season.

Brandon Nakashima (-138) vs. Stan Wawrinka (+110)

Maybe it’s because Nakashima, as the American, will have home court advantage, but he probably shouldn’t be the favorite in this match. There’s plenty of value in betting on the veteran Stan Wawrinka, who is 7-3 in his last ten matches, compared to Nakashima, who is 3-7.

Wawrinka also won the last match between the two in 2022 and has a better record on the hard court this year against tougher competition.

Cincinnati Masters Finals Prediction

Anything can happen in a tournament with such a loaded field, but it’s hard to imagine Alcaraz not advancing to the final through the top half of the bracket. He’s coming off of a disappointing result in Canada, losing for just the fifth time this season, and has had a few days to rest and recover.

At the same time, Djokovic hasn’t played since Wimbledon and should be just as motivated to get back on track after losing to Alcaraz in the semis. I’d expect an Alcaraz-Djokovic final, with Djokovic emerging as the champion.

The Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati is the last stop before the US Open and gives players one last chance to build momentum before the final Grand Slam of the season. It’s an ATP Masters 1000 event with a 56-player draw.

First played more than 100 years ago at the Avondale Athletic Club, the tournament is now held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Defending champion Alexander Zverev is noticeably absent from the tournament, although the draw does feature past champions Daniil Medvedev (2019), Gregor Dmitrov (2017), and Rafael Nadal (2013), the latter of whom is competing in his first tournament since withdrawing from his scheduled semifinal match against Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon. Nadal Back from Injury

Nadal battled through an abdominal injury in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and actually secured his spot in the semifinals, before being forced to withdraw from the tournament. He was scheduled to compete at last week’s National Bank Open Presented by Rogers, but withdrew at the last minute.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion is cautiously optimistic about his health in advance of the Western & Southern Open.

“Of course, I had a small tear in the abdominal so it’s dangerous. The abdominal is the place that is dangerous because in every serve you put a lot of effort there, so I need to take things a little bit easier and do the highs the proper way,” he told The Guardian. “That’s what I’m trying to do. Try to be a little more conservative but I hope I can be ready to play.”

The Young Guns

Carlos Alcaraz (+600) and Jannik Sinner (+1400) are both among the top five betting favorites to win the Western & Southern Open and deservedly so. Both players have shown flashes of brilliance this season, but have been unable to win when it matters most. A victory by either one here would vault them up the betting list for the upcoming US Open.

Sinner, who defeated Alcaraz to win the Croatia Open earlier this season, recently lost in the Round of 16 to Pablo Carreno Busta at the National Bank Open. He had a two-set lead on Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, before dropping three consecutive sets to the Serbian star.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, has also been in a bit of a slump. He lost to Sinner in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon (and in the finals of the Croatia Open) and then lost his first round match to underdog Tommy Paul at the National Bank Open.

Possible First-Round Upsets

The first round gets underway at 10 a.m. EST on Monday with Brandon Nakashima facing Aslan Karatsev. While there’s possible upsets in every match, the one that stands out is Frances Tiafoe (+162) against Matteo Berrettini (-200).

Although Berrettini reached the finals of the Swiss Open in July, he lost his first round match at the National Bank Open and has been fairly inconsistent this season. Tiafoe has been competitive in most matches and should present an early test for Berrettini.

Dan Evans (-175) should have a tough time with Filip Krajinovic (+137) as well. Evans, a 32-year-old English player, has played a lot of tennis as of late. He reached the semifinals and finals in singles and doubles at the National Bank Open and was a quarterfinalist in singles and doubles at the Citi Open.

With that thought in mind, let’s find out which remaining players have the best chances of reaching and winning the finals.

No. 5 Andrey Rublev

Despite coming up short in Dubai in his last event where he was ousted in the quarterfinals by Daniel Evans, the 22-year-old Russian is off to a solid 15-3 start this year with two titles (Doha, Adelaide). Rublev reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January after going back-to-back the previous two weeks. This year, the world No. 14 has beaten the likes of Sam Querry, Felix Auger-Aliassime, David Goffin and Alexander Zverev. With all three members of the famed ‘Big Three’ out of this event, Rublev will have a good chance to claim his first Masters 1000 title.

No. 4 Alex Zverev

The 23-year-old German is just 6-5 on the year, but his vast talent was on full display as he reached the semifinals at the Australian Open before losing a thrilling four-set affair against Dominic Thiem. Zverev took out Fernando Verdasco, Andrey Rublev and Stan Wawrinka down under and has won three Masters 1000 events in his young career (Rome, Canada, Madrid).

No. 3 Daniil Medvedev

The 24-year-old Russian is off to a modest 8-4 start. He reached the round of 16 at the Aussie Open before being dispatched by Stan Wawrinka. The world No. 5 was bounced in the first round in Rotterdam and the quarters in Marseilles in his last event in February. Still, though, the cerebral Medvedev is gifted and he should be confident after winning this tournament a year ago.

No. 2 Felix Auger-Aliassime

The 20-year-old Canadian is just 13-9 on the year, but more importantly, he’s on fire coming into this event. While the world No. 20 lost in the round of 16 in Acapulco in his last event in February, FAA reached consecutive finals in Rotterdam and Marseilles before losing to Gael Monfils and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively. Along the way, he’s beaten Grigor Dimitrov, Pablo Carreno Busta and veteran Gilles Simon. Auger-Aliassime is highly skilled and has arguably more upside than any young player on the ATP World Tour.

No. 1 Stefanos Tsitsipas

The 22-year-old Greek star is 13-5 on the year with one title in Marseilles where he took out Felix Auger-Aliassime in the finals. A week later, the world No. 6 reached the finals in Dubai opposite Novak Djokovic. While Tsitsipas, the 2019 Nitto ATP Finals winner, comes into this event having won six of his last seven matches and is clearly a player with tons of potential and a bright future.

Two For the Road

There are two more players that I believe will have a decent chance to hoist this year’s Western & Southern Open.

Dominic Thiem

The 26-year-old reached the finals at the Australian Open and took Novak Djokovic five sets before falling and he’s won 16 career singles titles. The bad news though is that Thiem has just one Masters 100 win in Indian Wells last year and has suffered inexplicable losses this year to the likes of Hubert Hurkacz and Gianluca Mager (who?).

Matteo Berrettini

The talented 24-year-old Italian won two titles a year ago by taking the hardware in Budapest and Stuttgart and the world No. 8 is clearly a player on the rise with his huge serve and underrated movement.

While only six of the 45 Masters 1000 tournaments between 2014-19 were won by players younger than 25, this year’s Western & Southern Open represents a great chance for one of the game’s young guns to win with Federer, Nadal and Djokovic all out.
