A few more top-ranked players were eliminated from contention at the 2023 US Open on Wednesday. Casper Ruud, last year’s runner-up, lost a shocking five-set match against Zhizen Zhang, and Stefanos Tsitsipas lost a five-set match against Dominic Stricker.
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, it was a great day for Americans as Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe all advanced to the third round.
In the women’s draw, American Taylor Townsend upset 19th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, while Caroline Wozniacki, playing her first Grand Slam since the 2020 Australian Open, advanced to the third round with a win over 11th seed Petra Kvitova.

John Isner declared prior to the US Open that this would be his last tournament before retirement. The 38-year-old American, who holds the career record for most aces on the ATP Tour, seems particularly motivated to hang on to his career for as long as possible, defeating Facundo Diaz Acosta in straight sets in the first round.
He didn’t face a break point in the entire match and won an impressive 86 percent of his second serve points.
Mmoh had similar success in the first round, taking out 11th seed Karen Khachanov in straight sets. This should be a competitive match in what has been a great start for American men at the US Open, but Isner should have the advantage with his serve.
Another win or two from Isner, and he could become the best story of the US Open.

Like Isner, Gael Monfils is nearing the end of his career but isn’t going down without a fight. Despite playing sparingly this season, the 36-year-old French player has impressed as of late, beating Alex de Minaur and Cam Norrie in the Cincinnati Masters and reaching the quarter-finals at the Canadian Open.
Andrey Rublev, the eighth seed, beat Arthur Cazaux in straight sets in the first round but had been struggling coming into the tournament; he won the Swedish Open in July but lost three of his next four matches.
Rublev and Monfils split their two prior meetings, both of which were on outdoor hard courts. There’s certainly strong upset potential here for Monfils.

Ekaterina Alexandrova, the 22nd seed, beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, in the first round, but now has to beat a woman to whom she has lost four times and never beaten in the second round.
Lesia Tsurenko, ranked 26 spots lower in the world rankings than Alexandrova, is 4-0 against the Russian. Tsurenko is 8-2 in her last ten matches and an impressive 23-6 on outdoor hard courts this season, although many of those matches have been in ITF events.
Still, at +131 odds, there’s great value in betting Tsurenko to stay undefeated against Alexandrova.

Marie Bouzkova is looking to advance to the Round of 32 at the US Open for the first time in her career. The 25-year-old Czech player beat American Ashlyn Krueger 7-5, 6-4 in the first round, improving to 20-20 this season, including 12-12 on outdoor hard courts.
Petra Martic, meanwhile, is 22-18 this season, including 6-9 on outdoor hard courts. She won her first-round match against Tatjana Maria 6-2, 6-1.
Bouzkova reached the quarter-finals at the Cincinnati Masters and Round of 16 at the Canadian Open. She is 8-2 in her last ten matches and should get past Martic, whom she beat previously in March 2022.
