Series History

The teams had been in opposite ACC divisions – there aren’t divisions any longer – so they didn’t play every year. Florida State leads 23-13-1 but lost the last matchup 24-3 in 2018.

Why Bet on Virginia Tech?

The Hokies (2-3) stopped a three-game skid on Saturday with a 38-21 win over Pittsburgh. Kyron Drones completed 12 of 19 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns while adding 21 carries 41 yards with two touchdowns. In his second start of the season in place of starting quarterback Grant Wells (ankle), Drones performed admirably as he completed 63 percent of his passes while connecting with three different receivers to find the end zone. Wells’ status is still to be determined for this week.

Tailback Bhayshul Tuten tallied 24 rushes for 109 yards while reeling in all four of his targets for 37 yards and one touchdown. Tuten had his best rushing performance of the season, as he broke the century mark for the first time across five games. Wideout Da’Quan Felton notched four receptions on seven targets for 81 yards and one touchdown. He finished with over 80 yards for the second time this season while also scoring his second touchdown of the year.

For the second week in a row, the Hokies scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the game. It’s the first time Tech has scored a touchdown on the opening drive in back-to-back games since the North Carolina and Georgia Tech games in 2018. Virginia Tech has now scored in 362 straight games, the third-longest active streak in the nation among FBS schools.

Tech’s Lunch Pail Defense held the Panthers to just nine first downs. That’s the fewest first downs allowed since allowing just eight first downs to Pitt in a 28-0 shutout in 2019. They also held Pitt to just 46 plays in the game. That ties for third fewest plays allowed in a game since 1987. Virginia was held to 46 plays in 2008. The fewest plays allowed is 42 against Wake Forest in 2010 followed by 44 plays by Wofford in 2022 and Virginia in 2006.

When the Hokies are able to generate pressure up front, they have won every contest this season in which they recorded at least four sacks.

Why Bet on Florida State?

FSU (4-0) became the clear-cut ACC favorite when it won at Clemson on Sept. 23, 31-24 in overtime – the team was off last week. Keon Coleman caught a 24-yard TD pass from QB Jordan Travis in overtime and the Seminoles followed up with a defensive stand to snap a seven-game losing streak to Clemson. Travis completed 21-of-37 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns against a Tiger defense determined to stop the Seminole running game which managed just 22 yards on 20 attempts.

Travis moved to 3rd in FSU history with 8,744 yards of total offense; 6th with 6,916 passing yards; 8th with 500 career completions; tied for 8th with 26 career rushing touchdowns; and tied for 7th with 21 wins as the starting quarterback. Travis has thrown at least one touchdown in 16 consecutive games, the longest streak by an FSU quarterback since 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston’s 27-game streak in 2013-14. He has multiple TD passes in five straight games, a career high.

Coleman caught five passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns – his 5th and 6th of the season. Coleman has played just four games at FSU in his career and is the Noles active receiving TD leader. Florida State did not turn the ball over for the second time this season. Clemson entered with a takeaway in 16 consecutive home games, the longest active streak in the country. The Tigers’ last home game without a takeaway was vs. Boston College in 2020.

The win snapped Clemson’s 25-game ACC home winning streak, which was the longest in the nation. The Noles are 21-15 all-time against Clemson. Florida State’s 10-game winning streak is the 4th-longest in the country. FSU has scored at least 30 points in all 10 games, the 2nd-longest active streak. Both streaks are FSU’s longest since the 2012-14 seasons.

The Seminoles are averaging 43.2 points per game to rank second in the ACC behind Miami and seventh nationally. Their 427.2 total yards per game is respectable, ranking seventh among 14 teams in the ACC and 47th nationally.

FSU hasn’t faced VT under coach Mike Norvell previously. However, there is some familiarity between the two sides as former Florida State linebackers coach Chris Marve (2020-21) holds the defensive coordinator position for the Hokies.
