Series History

Since 2011, Seattle has won five of six games between the two teams – including all three in MetLife – to tie the series that began in 1976, 10-10. This is the teams’ first-ever Monday night meeting. They met last year in Week 8 in the Pacific Northwest and the Hawks won 27-13. Tyler Lockett hauled in the pass from Geno Smith with 9:18 left that snapped a 13-13 tie. Kenneth Walker III added a 16-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes. Daniel Jones was 17 of 31 for 176 yards and was sacked five times for New York.

Why Bet on Seattle?

Seattle has scored 37 points in back-to-back games, both wins. The Hawks beat the Panthers 37-27 last Sunday. Geno Smith completed 23 of 36 passes for 296 yards and one touchdown with one interception. He also threw a two-point conversion to Tyler Lockett. The pick was his first of the season and snuffed out a second-quarter drive, but it didn’t end up costing his squad. Despite guards Damien Lewis and Anthony Bradford getting banged up early, Seattle rushed for a season-high 146 yards, holding Carolina to just 44.

Seattle has ruled out CBs Tre Brown and Artie Burns for Monday night’s game vs. the Giants. LT Charles Cross and CB Coby Bryant are doubtful. Bryant is Seattle’s primary nickelback and Burns is one of his backups, so Seattle may play first-round rookie Devon Witherspoon there for the first time. That would mean Witherspoon continuing to start at left CB and moving inside in nickel situations.

The Seahawks defense is allowing just 2.9 yards per carry so far, third-best in the NFL and two full yards better than their 4.9 YPC average from last season, which was seventh-worst. They gave up the third-most rushing yards (2,554) of any team in 2022.

“That was the biggest emphasis for the defensive side of the ball this offseason was we’ve got to stop the run,” inside linebacker Jordyn Brooks said. “We thought last year’s performance as far as stopping the run was embarrassing, and not the standard that’s been upheld here. So that’s been the emphasis, and I think we’ve gotten better each week. We just want to keep rolling and keep that mentality.”

That defense will see the season debut of star safety Jamal Adams on Monday. Adams, a three-time Pro Bowl selection and a first-team All-Pro in 2019, hasn’t played since he tore the quad tendon in his left leg in Week 1 of last season. He began training camp on the physically unable to perform list and was activated on Aug. 24, though he didn’t start practicing until Week 2 of the regular season, taking part only in walk-throughs before that.

The Seahawks are 28-12 on Monday night, a .700 winning percentage that is the NFL’s best. Since Pete Carroll became coach in 2010, they are 33-14-1 in prime-time games, an NFL-best .698 winning percentage. The Baltimore Ravens are second at .674.

Why Bet on New York?

The Giants have been off since they lost 30-12 last Thursday at the Giants playing without star running back Saquon Barkley. He is not expected Monday. So far this season, he has 29 carries with 114 yards and one touchdown across two games. He also has nine receptions for 41 yards and one receiving score.

Matt Breida rushed four times for 17 yards and a touchdown and brought in all three targets for one yard starting in Barkley’s place. QB Daniel Jones completed 22 of 32 passes for 137 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and added two rushes for five yards in the loss. Jones was only sacked twice and picked off once, but he was hit an additional four times unofficially and also limited to 4.3 yards per attempt.

Heading into Week 4, quarterback Daniel Jones has been pressured on 46.7 percent of his dropbacks this year, according to Pro Football Focus, which is the highest rate in the league. Jones has completed 71.2 percent of passes (47 of 66) for 467 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions when not pressured this season. Those numbers drop down to 16 of 31 passing (51.6 percent) for 95 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions when pressured, resulting in a difference in passer rating of 57.4 points.

Seattle has been particularly susceptible to opposition passing attacks, yielding 328.0 yards a game, which is more than any team but the Los Angeles Chargers has allowed.

“I think they’re a good defense,” Jones said. “They’ve faced some dynamic offenses and good passing attacks. (They have a) good scheme and good players. There’s stuff you can learn from there, but we have a lot of respect for their defense and who they have.”

Pass-rusher Azeez Ojulari has no injury designation ahead of Monday night’s game against Seattle. The 2021 second-round pick has been nursing a hamstring injury that held him out of the Giants’ past two games, but it seems as if he’s had time to move past the issue. Ojulari’s return should definitely help a struggling New York pass rush, as the 23-year-old recorded 13.5 sacks over his first two years in the NFL.

Taking out the Cowboys‘ defensive and special teams touchdowns in Week 1, the Giants’ defense has allowed point totals of 27, 28 and 30 through the first three games. Part of the reason for the high point totals has been missed tackles.
