Love it or hate it, we are now just a little over a month away from the start of bowl season. Playoff games aside, there are 39 bowl games coming over the holiday season, so there is a lot to figure out between now and the end of the season. It takes 6 wins to become officially bowl eligible, but with so many teams getting into the bowl games, we will have a few teams getting there on the heels of a losing record, which is perhaps why some fans would like to see the number of games cut down. There are still enough games to come in the regular season that predicting who will land where is tough, but let’s break down the College Football Bowl Betting picture as best we can right now.

Bowl Picture After Passing the Middle of the 2022-23 NCAAF Season

Playoff Games

There are a couple of huge games to come that will see the current playoff picture change rather dramatically. The first of those comes this weekend, with Tennessee on the road to play Georgia. We also have Ohio State and Michigan set to meet in a few weeks. Those game could very well open the playoff door for the teams sitting below the top 4. If the season were to end today, the playoff games would look as follows:

Who is In?

Let’s break it down by conference to see who is in at the moment, remembering that it takes 6 wins to become bowl eligible:

AAC – Tulane, UCF, Cincinnati, East Carolina
ACC – Clemson, Syracuse, UNC, NC State, Wake Forest
Big 12 – TCU Kansas State, Oklahoma State
Big Ten – Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland, Illinois
C-USA – UTSA
Independent – Liberty
Mid-American – Ohio, Toledo
Mountain West – Boise State, Wyoming
PAC-12 – Oregon, USC, UCLA, Utah, Oregon State, Washington
SEC – Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama
Sun Belt – Coastal Carolina, Troy, South Alabama

For the teams that have already punched their tickets but who are out of the playoff picture, the goal at this point is to land in one of the big New Year’s bowl games.

Teams In Trouble

There are going to be some bigger schools who miss out on bowl season this year, with the pressure almost certainly mounting on those programs as we edge closer to the end of the regular season. Let’s take a closer look at the bigger teams on the bubble, specifically those playing in the Power 5 conferences.

The Miami Hurricanes are sitting at 4-4 right now, as are the Pittsburgh Panthers. 2 more wins for each is certainly doable, but also not guaranteed.

In the Big 12, Texas Tech looks to be the team in the most trouble, as they still need a pair of wins to become eligible.

Iowa and Wisconsin are both sitting at 4-4 on the season, so they also need a pair of wins each to get in.

In the PAC-12, the team that still has a chance to get in is Washington State, as they are at 4-4 with 4 games to come.

There are some big teams in real trouble in the SEC, with Florida, Auburn, who just fired their head coach, and Texas A&M all in danger of missing out.
