The USC Trojans were on their way to a playoff berth until their plans were derailed by the Utah Utes in the Pac-12 title game. Even though they didn’t get into the playoffs, the Trojans earned themselves a bid to the Cotton Bowl to take on the Green Wave of Tulane. This looked like an easy victory for the Trojans.

Well, the Green Wave had other plans in mind, and after blowing a 16-point lead in the last four minutes, the USC Trojans lost to the Tulane Green Wave by a score of 46-45. This was one of the biggest upsets in recent bowl history. With that being said, Lincoln Riley’s crew come into the 2023 season with a bad taste in their mouth from how last season ended.

That brings us to 2023. The Trojans are ready to make a statement this season, as they’ll be heading to the Big 10 soon. They want to show everyone that they’re over the upset in the Cotton Bowl, and that they’re ready to contend for a National Championship this season. Ranked as high as seventh in some preseason polls, the Trojans are ready to make a run.

Can the Trojans Stop Anyone from Scoring?

Defense has been this team’s downfall, and it could be again this season. A Riley-led team has never been good defensively, and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch knows that he needs to change that, or his job could be in jeopardy.

The Trojans have one of the best recruiting classes in the country, and they have hit the transfer portal hard, so maybe this could be the year that the defense finally shows up for Riley and the Trojans.

Will Anyone Be Able to Stop Caleb Williams?

The Heisman Trophy winner is back for another season, and many project that he will be the top pick in next year’s NFL Draft. He can run and throw, and will make an excellent pro quarterback. Even though he lost some key offensive weapons, the Trojans have reloaded their arsenal, and Williams will have another strong offensive group.

2023 USC Schedule

In looking at their schedule, their two early non-conference games are against San Jose State and Nevada. Those should be easy wins for the Trojans. They then enter the Pac 12 season where they will face Stanford at home, a rebuilding Arizona State team on the road, and then head to a meeting with “Coach Prime” at Colorado. Realistically, we see USC being undefeated at this point.

They then host Arizona prior to heading to South Bend to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. USC then hosts Utah, followed by a trip to Cal, and then they host Washington. The games against Notre Dame, Utah, and Washington will be very tough.

USC ends the season at Oregon, followed by a game with their cross-town rivals, the UCLA Bruins. We could see both of these teams beating the Trojans.

We think that USC will lose at least two games during the regular season. This will then take them out of playoff contention. It will be their defense that will let them down once again this season. Caleb Williams won’t be able to outscore everyone, and the defense will cause more pain to the USC program.
