Memphis at Tulane Odds: 2024 NCAAF Expert Analysis in the Regular-Season finale

It’s the regular-season finale for nine-win AAC schools Memphis and No. 17 Tulane on Thursday night as the meet in New Orleans.

The Green Wave already have clinched a spot in the conference title game and also have College Football Playoff hopes and are two-TD favorites on the NCAAF odds.

Opening NCAAF Lines Subject to Change: Tulane -14 (total 55)
Expert Prediction in Week 14: Tulane 31, Memphis 24

Memphis Tigers NCAAF Line +420

The Tigers (9-2, 5-2 AAC) last played on Nov. 16 and scored a season high in points in a 53-178 rout of UAB. With the victory, Memphis completed an undefeated season at home for the first time since 2020. The Tiger defense created four takeaways while Memphis’ all-time leading passer Seth Henigan shined with four passing touchdowns and 299 yards through the air on 23-of-34 passing.

Seth Henigan

The four passing scores for Henigan gave him 100 for his career and made him one of three active FBS quarterbacks to reach that milestone (Dillon Gabriel; Oregon, Will Rogers; Washington). Memphis ran for 227 yards, the sixth time this season it has rushed for over 200 yards. The Tigers were paced by senior running back Mario Anderson Jr.’s 138 yards as he logged his seventh 100-yard effort of the campaign – the most by a Tiger since Kenneth Gainwell in 2019 (7). Anderson Jr. became just the ninth individual Tiger to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.

Henigan is 173 yards from The American’s all-time passing record held by former East Carolina quarterback Holton Ahlers (13,927). In addition; four more passing TDs would tie Henigan with former Houston Cougar Clayton Tune (104) for the most in conference history. On the season, Henigan has thrown for 2,990 yards and 21 touchdowns to just six interceptions while completing nearly 64 percent of his passes. His passing yards are ninth most in the country while his 21 touchdowns are 16th most. His 24.4 completions per game are good for No. 9 in FBS.

Scored Points

The Tigers have now scored 20 or more points in 38-consecutive games – the longest active streak in the nation – dating back to a 33-28 win over Tulane on Nov. 27, 2021. Memphis (63) is one of five teams with 60 or more home wins since 2014, along with Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Michigan.

Dating back to the win over UAB last year, Memphis has forced at least one turnover in 14 of its last 18 games. Over that stretch, the Tigers have created 32 takeaways (17 INT, 15 FR). Head coach Ryan Silverfield is 18-0 in his Memphis tenure when holding opponents to 20 points or less.

Thanksgiving Game

Memphis will be playing a game on Thanksgiving Day for the 23rd time in program history. Thursday’s matchup will be the first Thanksgiving Day contest for the Tigers since 1983. Memphis is bowl eligible for the 11th-consecutive season, the longest stretch of any non-Power 4 team in the country.

Since 2015, Memphis has posted a record of 8-11 (.421) against top-25 ranked opponents. The eight victories are the most over that stretch for any non-Power 5 team in the country. The last came in 2021 vs. SMU.

Tulane Green Wave NCAAF Line -599

Tulane (9-1, 7-0) is in the AAC title game next week vs. Army no matter what happens here and if the Green Wave win out could get into the playoff for the first time. They last played on Nov. 16 at Navy and rolled 35-0. It was Tulane’s first conference shutout since 1960. The Green Wave limited Navy to just 113 yards including only 13 passing yards in the game and 1-for-11 on third down. Tulane picked up 358 yards with 138 through the air and 220 on the ground. The team also went 6-for-13 on third down while holding onto the ball for 35:47 and forcing a pair of turnovers.

Darian Mensah

Mensah had a strong all-around performance in going 10-for-14 for 138 yards and two touchdowns through the air and also running for a career-high 57 and a touchdown in the victory. Makhi Hughes ran for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

The Turnovers

With multiple turnovers forced against Navy, Tulane has now won 27 of the last 31 games when forcing an opponent turnover. Tulane has now outrushed the opposition in 29 of the last 37 games (including 23 of the last 27). In such contests, Tulane holds a 27-2 record (losses in 2022 vs. Southern Miss and 2023 vs. Ole Miss). Since the beginning of the 2016 season, Tulane is 51-7 (.879) when leading at the half and 53-9 (.855) when leading or tied after three quarters.

Jon Sumrall

The win was the first time that Sumrall has won his first seven conference games in three years as a head coach. It was his 12th straight regular season conference victory dating back to the Sun Belt Conference game he lost to James Madison while at Troy last season. Sumrall’s teams are now 25-0 in his coaching career when outrushing the opponent.

The Streak

The win was Tulane’s eighth straight overall and the 17th consecutive AAC regular victory dating back to the 2022 campaign. Tulane has now tied the AAC record for consecutive regular season conference victories. Both losses for Green Wave this season have come to teams that were ranked in Associated Press Top 25 including a 34-27 home defeat to then No. 17 Kansas State on Sept. 7 and a 34-19 road loss to then No. 15 Oklahoma on Sept. 14.

Makhi Hughes

Hughes leads the AAC and ranks fifth nationally in rushing this season with 1,291 yards. He also ranks third in the conference and 10th nationally with 15 rushing touchdowns. His 14 100+ career rushing games places Hughes in fourth place all-time at Tulane. Hughes was named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award, which goes to the country’s top running back.

The Green Wave have the No. 4 scoring offense (40.5) in the country and lead The American and is No. 10 in scoring defense (17.). Tulane has the No. 10 rushing offense (227.1) and the No. 24 rushing defense (113.3) while ranking No. 9 in total defense (290.4) to lead the AAC.

2019 Tulane vs Memphis, Week 8

Part of the fun of betting on college football is going through the huge weekly schedule and finding a few diamonds in the rough that are worth wagering on. Many bettors stick with the Power 5 conferences, mostly because they are wagering on teams they know and see on TV every single week. There is a level of familiarity there, but there is also enough data out there to make informed betting decisions on every single game. If you are one of those people who likes to watch the games that you are wagering on, then we have a good one for you this Saturday night.

Outside of UCF, the AAC may not get a lot of attention, but it is generally entertaining to watch, especially of you like offensive-minded football. Two of the best teams in the conference will square off this weekend, with the Tulane Green Wave heading to Memphis to take on the Tigers. You can catch this one on ESPN2, so you can watch to see how your bets are doing. Memphis is in as a 3 ½ point home favorite, with the point total for this one set at 59 ½.

Why bet on the Tulane Green Wave?

Tulane are coming into this game on a bit of a hot streak, having won 4 in a row to take their season record to 5-1. They are also now sitting at 2-0 in conference play, which has them tied with the SMU Mustangs for the lead in the AAC West Division. It goes without saying that this is a game they need to win if they are to keep pace with the Mustangs, but they certainly look equipped to do so, as their offense has been on fire during their 4-game winning streak.

They have racked up a total of 187 points during that 4-game run, covering the spread in all 4 games. The Green Wave have now won 7 of their last 8 and are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games.

Why bet on the Memphis Tigers?

The Memphis Tigers hopes of getting into the AAC Championship Game took a serious blow last weekend. Heading into Week 7 with a perfect 5-0 record, the Tigers went on the road to face Temple as a 4-point favorite, but they ended up coming up short in a 30-28 loss to the Owls.

That dropped them to 1-1 in conference play and put them right behind the 8-ball, with 2 teams now above them with perfect conference records. Tulane are one of those teams, so Memphis can help their cause by getting a win this weekend. They have won 5 straight games at home, but perhaps better yet, they have won 6 in a row at home to Tulane. They are 10-5 ATS in their last 15 games overall.

Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction for Tulane vs Memphis

Tulane would appear to be a little up against it given their inability to get the job done in Memphis over the years. I think we are about to see a minor upset here, though, as I like the Green Wave to go in and win as the underdog. I also like the OVER.

Score: Tulane Green Wave 39 – Memphis Tigers 33
