World Cup 2022 Group G: Brazil vs. Serbia Betting Preview

Written by on November 23, 2022

Brazil and Serbia begin their respective FIFA 2022 World Cup campaigns on Thursday with a Group G matchup at 2:00 p.m. EST at Lusail Iconic Stadium. Cameroon and Switzerland meet in the other Group G match on Thursday.

Brazil enters the World Cup as the betting favorite to win it all. The South American country leads all nations with five World Cup titles but hasn’t reached the final since 2002. They reached the quarter-finals at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Serbia hasn’t advanced past the Group Stage in either of its last two World Cup appearances.

FIFA 2022 World Cup: Brazil vs. Serbia

Head-to-Head History

This is the second consecutive World Cup that Brazil and Serbia are in the same group. The two countries were in Group E at the 2018 World Cup, and Brazil defeated Serbia 2-0 in their matchup that year. Paulinho and Thiago Silva scored for Brazil, which held a 58-42 possession advantage. Brazil finished first in the group with seven points, while Serbia finished third with three points.

Brazil beat Serbia 1-0 in the prior meeting between the two countries on June 6, 2014, in an international friendly.

Last 5 Matches

As is usually the case, Brazil didn’t have much trouble qualifying for the World Cup. They’ve also continued their strong play in friendlies leading up to the World Cup. Brazil beat Tunisia 5-1 on September 27 and, before that, beat Ghana 3-0. It tied Argentina 0-0 and has 1-0 and 5-1 wins over Japan and South Korea.

Serbia has also been playing well in the lead-up to Thursday’s opening match. They defeated Bahrain 5-1 on November 18 and also have victories over Norway and Sweden. They played a 2-2 draw against Slovenia.

Betting Odds and Props

Brazil is the -200 favorite on the three-way moneyline for Thursday’s match against Serbia. A draw between the two teams pays out +320, while a Serbian victory pays out +550.

The over/under for goals in the match is set at 2.5, with the over and under paying out -138 and +110, respectively. Other betting options include result/both teams to score: Brazil/yes (+225), Brazil/no (+150), Serbia/yes (+1100), Serbia/no (+1000), draw/yes (+450), and draw/no (+1100).

Anytime goalscorers player props include Neymar (+125), Guilherme Pedro (+137), Jose Vinicius Junior (+200), Luka Jovic (+375), and Dusan Tadic (+450).

Betting Prediction

Serbia is a team that shouldn’t be overlooked in the competitive Group G. There are no easy points on the table with opponents like Switzerland and Cameroon, so the Serbian side will be pressing for an upset against Brazil. Similarly, the five-time World Cup champions know they can’t afford to lose their opening match.

Aleksandar Mitrovic is expected to miss the match for Serbia, which is a big loss. He has 50 goals in 76 matches for the Serbian national side. Brazil, a more experienced side than Serbia, should be able to overwhelm their opponent with their strong attack led by Neymar, who has 75 goals in 121 international appearances.

Picks: Brazil -200 and Neymar anytime goalscorer +125
