Canada Odds to Win the FIFA World Cup and Will They Move to Round of 16

Written by on June 21, 2022

Like Mexico and the United States, CONCACAF squad Canada believes it has what it takes to move to the World Cup’s knockout stage. To do so, Canada must play better soccer than it ever has. Will the Canadians step it up enough to make it to the Round of 16? Or will Canada play to their odds and fold during group stage? Check out a Canadian FIFA World Cup Odds analysis and a prediction as to whether the Canada moves to the next round.

Canada Odds to Win the FIFA Qatar World Cup

  • Canada +16000

Before this year, Canada had qualified for the world’s most important soccer tournament once, in 1986. During Argentina’s magical run to the title, the Canadians played terrible soccer, finishing last of twenty-four teams.

Canada yielded 5 goals in 3 losses. The Canadians didn’t score a single goal during group play. But during qualifying this World Cup cycle, the Canadian’s stepped it up. Does that mean Canada is worth a look at the massive odds?

Nope. Canada’s chances of winning the World Cup are much worse than 160-to-1. Sure, the Canadians qualified for the World Cup and only 31 other teams also qualified, but Canada doesn’t have a single UEFA League, LaLiga, Serie A, or Bundesliga player on their roster.

Not only that, but Canada may have peaked during WC qualifying. Sounds crazy because the odds are so massive, but at +16000, Canada is an underlay.

Why Canada will move to the next round

Just because Canada is a huge longshot to win the World Cup, it doesn’t mean they have no shot of moving to the next round. Early during FIFA World Cup Qualifying Canada dominated.

The Canadians rested at the top of the CONCACAF WC Qualifying Standings. At one point, Canada won 3 straight, dusting Honduras 2-0, the United States 2-0, and El Salvador 2-0.

If Canada rediscovers the early qualifying magic, they can move to the Round of 16.

Why Canada won’t move to the next round

Yes, Canada played great early on during World Cup qualifying, but after beating El Salvador 2-0, things fell apart. The Canadians lost to Costa Rica and Panama in 2 of their final 3 World Cup qualifiers.

In their last Nations League match, on June 13, Honduras beat Canada 2-1. So although the Canadians started the year playing great soccer, they have since started to play awful soccer.

Final Analysis – Canada should struggle in Group F

Canada drew into Group F where Belgium and Croatia should dominate. The Belgians remain one of the best soccer teams in the world.

Croatia isn’t as good in 2022 as they were in 2018. But Luka Modric continues to play at a high level. Not only that, but Croatia will send plenty of young talent to the pitch.

Even Morocco might be a better play than Canada. The Canadians top player is Lille forward Jonathan David.

Moroccans Munir El Haddadi and Youssef En-Nesyri play forward for Sevilla in LaLiga. Aymen Barkok is a Frankfurt midfielder. Noussair Mazraoui is a defender for Bayern Munich.

We should congratulate the Canadians for qualifying, but Canada has almost zero chance of moving to the knockout stage. A Canadian performance similar to 1986, zero goals and 3 losses, is more than probable.
