The PGA Tour returns to the state of Ohio for its annual stop at Muirfield Village for the 48th playing of the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. The tournament has been a yearly stop on the Tour’s schedule since 1976. Jack Nicklaus, an eighteen-time major champion, designed the course and has hosted the event since its inception.

Tournament play begins on Thursday, June 1st, and ends on Sunday, June 4th, after four rounds of individual stroke play. Following the first two rounds of action, the tournament field will be reduced from 120 players to the top 70 players, including ties. 

With the Tour’s new designated events this season, the Memorial Tournament saw its purse increase from $12 million in 2022 to $20 million this year. The winner of Jack’s tournament will take home $3.6 million of that purse total.

Last season, Billy Horschel prevailed four-shots clear of runner-up Aaron Wise. The victory was Horschel’s seventh of his career and his first and only win of the season.

Muirfield Village Golf Club

There are two courses on the property, with tournament play taking place at the iconic Muirfield Village Golf Club. The par-72 layout stretches over 7,500 yards and was designed by Nicklaus to be both a stern but fair test. With a watchful eye on every change made to the course, Muirfield Village has undergone numerous changes since it opened its doors in 1974.

The Playing Field

The Memorial Tournament is one of five events on the PGA Tour schedule, given invitational status. The field is reduced from 156 players to 120, with the freedom to determine which players earn a spot in the smaller field.

The top eight players in the current official world rankings are expected to be in action this week, led by world no. 1 Scottie Scheffler. The 26-year-old and PLAYERS champion hasn’t missed the weekend in 15 events played this season, securing top-25 finishes in all but one of them.

Joining Scheffler is world no. 2 and the winner of this event in 2020, Jon Rahm. Rahm is looking for his 12th PGA Tour title and first since winning the Masters back in April.

Other notable elite players in the field include Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, two-time event winner Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, and Collin Morikawa.

Betting Favorites

Scheffler (+650) and Rahm (+720) are the pre-tournament front-runners, with Cantlay (+980), Schauffele (+1275), and McIlroy (+1275) rounding out the top five favorites. Viktor Hovland (+1925) is rounding into form after a T2 at the PGA Championship, followed up by a T16 last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Further down the list but still on the front page of the odds board are Thomas (+2700) and fan-favorite Rickie Fowler (+3400). Fowler is quietly returning to form and looking for that first PGA victory since 2019. Outside of his missed cut at the PGA Championship, Fowler has finished no worse than T17 in five events and comes to Dublin after a T6 last week at Colonial.
