The 2022 edition of the Presidents Cup returns this week when the American Team hosts the International Team at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. 

The tournament runs from Tuesday, September 20th, through Sunday, September 25th. This will be the first time Quail Hollow, the annual host of the Wells Fargo Championship, will host the Presidents Cup. Odds to Win the 2022 Presidents Cup Title | Golf Betting Analysis

The American Team has dominated the event held every other year since 1994, winning all but two editions. The International squad took home its only victory in 1998 while the two teams tied five years later in 2003. 

Captained by Tiger Woods, the Americans bested the Internationals by a score of 16-14 at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia in 2019. Originally planned for 2020, the tournament was postponed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The scoring system of the tournament is match play, with a point awarded to the winners of each match. There are a total of 30 points awarded, so the winning team needs to garner 15.5 points to win the Cup. A total of nine fourball and foursomes are played over the first three days, with 12 single individual matches conducted on the final day of the Cup.

American Team

Davis Love III captains the American team this time around, with Fred Couples, Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker, and Webb Simpson serving as assistant captains. The team includes the top six players who earned the most FedEx Cup points, along with six captains’ picks. The American team is listed below:

Players who elected to jump to the LIV Invitational Series were not allowed to participate in the team competitions due to their revoked status on the PGA Tour. Cantlay, Schauffele, Thomas, and Finau were members of the winning team in 2019.

 

International Team

The International Team is captained by Trevor Immelman, with K.J. Choi, Geoff Ogilvy, Camilo Vegas, and Mark Weir serving as his assistants. The team is comprised of the top eight from the Presidents Cup International Team Points List, along with four additional captain’s selections. The team is:

Like the American Team, International players that are part of the LIV Tour were banned from tournament competition. Eight of the 12 players are making their Presidents Cup debut, while Matsuyama, Im, and Scott teed it up for the International Team in 2019.

Given the historical dominance by the Americans, it is no surprise that entering the week; Team USA is a heavy betting favorite to win.
