Waste Management Phoenix Open Odds, Picks, and PGA Betting Analysis

The Waste Management Phoenix Open is one of the most unique and exciting tournaments on the PGA Tour. Rather than the reserved and quiet atmosphere players are accustomed to at courses like Augusta and Pebble Beach, the crowds at TPC Scottsdale are raucous and ready to party.

It’s one of the best weekends of the golf season, not just for the atmosphere but the quality of players it attracts. That’s even more true this year as it’s the first $20 million event of the season. It also coincides with the Super Bowl, so let’s just say it’s a great weekend for avid sports bettors.

The field at this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open includes the top three-ranked players and six of the top seven in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). Defending champion Scottie Scheffler opens with the third-shortest golf odds (+1225) behind Rory McIlroy (+830) and Jon Rahm (+700), both of whom are at the top of their game right now which should make your PPGA Tour betting more interesting.

Betting Favorite Jon Rahm

It should be no surprise that Rahm has the shortest odds to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The talented Spaniard already has two tournament victories (The American Express and Sentry Tournament of Champions) this season, which equals his career-best, in only five starts. He has finished top-10 in each of those events.

MyBookie lists Rahm at +1650 to lead after the first round. If you’re making this bet, you may as well take Rahm to win outright, as he’s been dynamite when he gets off to a good start. Rahm shot a first-round score of 64 in both The American Express and Sentry Tournament of Champions. He shot at least 69 in the first round of his other three events before rallying on the weekend.

Why You Should Back Xander Schauffele

Although he has yet to win this season, Xander Schauffele is coming off of a breakthrough season and hopes to build upon that this year. He has finished at least top-13 in each of his four events and was top-five at the Hero World Challenge and The American Express. Before the Farmers Insurance Open two weeks ago, Schauffele had just two rounds over 70 this season.

Schauffele finished one shot back of Scheffler and Patrick Cantlay, who went to a playoff to determine the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open. He was also one shot back of winning at TPC Scottsdale in 2021. He clearly enjoys playing here and, despite his past success, should fly under the radar with all the big names participating.

Even a $10 bet on Schauffele at +1425 could net you $142.50 in profit. The American is also paying out +2400 to lead after the first round. He’s +480 in a 72-hole betting group that involves McIlroy (+220), Rahm (+220), Scheffler (+400), and Cantlay (+600).
