Will Mage Be a Triple Crown Winner after Winning Kentucky Derby?

Gustavo Delgado trained Mage ran past Two Phil’s and held off Angel of Empire to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby. Mage now has a chance to be the fourteenth Triple Crown winner. To accomplish the feat, Mage must win the Preakness Stakes in two weeks before taking home the Belmont Stakes Trophy on June 10.

Can Mage accomplish the feat? Check out the betting reasons Mage wins the Triple Crown and reasons the Delgado trainee doesn’t.

Will Mage Be a Triple Crown Winner after Winning Kentucky Derby? Why or Why Not?

When: Saturday, May 6 – Saturday, June 10
Where: Churchill Down, Pimlico Racecourse, Belmont Park

Why Mage Won’t Win the Triple Crown

Only 12 horses have won the Triple Crown since Sir Barton took home the first Crown in 1919. Since then many have tried, but only the 12, including such great horses as Secretariat, American Pharoah, Citation and Seattle Slew, have accomplished the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont sweep.

History says Mage doesn’t get it done. It may not even be something that has to do with the horse. In 1979 Spectacular Bid stepped on a tack in his barn that was just enough to affect his race in the Belmont.

I’ll Have Another was a Triple Crown winner until he came up hurt on the morning of the Belmont. Something stands in the way of winning the Triple Crown. Mage has a massive hill to climb.

Why Mage will Win the Triple Crown

If Mage doesn’t get injured, he’ll have a big shot. The horse is flexible. Mage broke his maiden while running on the lead. He came from the clouds in the Florida Derby and in the Kentucky Derby.

So the horse has the turn of foot to get it done. Mage, for sure, has the talent to win the Preakness and Belmont. Also, the breeding, sired by Good Magic and from a Big Brown mare, suggests distance won’t be an issue.

Final Analysis: Will Mage be a Triple Crown winner?

We like to dream about winning the Triple Crown, but, usually, the Derby winner isn’t talented enough to win races at three different tracks and three different distances in the span of five weeks.

So although we often dream about a Triple Crown winner, it just isn’t possible. In this case, Mage has the ability, trainer, and breeding to win the Triple Crown.

For starters, he didn’t run nearly as hard as second-place finisher Two Phil’s. Two Phil’s ran a bang up race to win the Jack Ruby Steaks. Then, he ran close to the pace in the Derby.

Mage got a nice rest after closing to finish second in the Florida Derby. It was only his fourth lifetime race. Trainer Gustavo Delgado has plenty of horse left to win the Preakness and the Belmont.

Second, Mage has a turn of foot, but he isn’t reliant on it. Angel of Empire is reliant on his turn of foot. So when Angel had to go wide in the Derby, it was just enough to prevent Angel from getting by Mage.

Mage broke his maiden running on the lead at Gulfstream. The Derby winner had a 4-length lead in the stretch in that maiden score. If required, Javier Castellano can put Mage close to or even on the lead in both the Preakness and Belmont.

So the bottom line is that if nothing happens to Mage from now until the Belmont on June 10, the horse has the ability, and should, win the Triple Crown.
