The Detroit Tigers have been truly atrocious since the All-Star break and things aren’t too likely to get much better on Wednesday when they close out a series at the Los Angeles Angels, who are favored on the MLB Lines.

Why Bet on Detroit?

Seems likely the Tigers could trade both outfielder/third baseman Nicholas Castellanos and closer Shane Greene by Wednesday afternoon. Castellanos went 0-for-4 with a run scored Monday in his return to action against the Angels. He was a late scratch Sunday due to abdominal tightness, but it shouldn’t an issue moving forward nor should it have an impact on trade talks.

Greene hurled a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation on Monday against the Angels. Greene came in with the Tigers leading 7-2, so he doesn’t qualify for the save. He lowered his ERA to 1.18 on the season.

The Tigers called up catching prospect Jake Rogers prior to Tuesday’s game versus the Angels. Bobby Wilson is going through the outright waivers process and will be the corresponding move. Rogers, 24, has batted .250/.361/.484 with 14 home runs between Double- and Triple-A this season and is viewed as one of the better defensive catching prospects in baseball. He’s ranked by MLB.com as the team’s No. 7 prospect and was acquired from the Astros two years ago in the Justin Verlander deal.

Niko Goodrum has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games and is batting .375/.400/.646 with two doubles, one triple, three home runs and seven RBI in that span. Miguel Cabrera now has 2,767 hits in his career, which is 55th on the MLB all-time hits list. Cabrera is two hits away from tying Johnny Damon for 54th.

Lefty Daniel Norris allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over 6.1 innings in Friday’s 3-2 loss to the Mariners. He struck out eight and took a no-decision. Norris was strong in this outing, but a two-run home run by Tom Murphy in the seventh inning was enough to take the left-hander out of the running for a decision. Norris has been inconsistent this season — he’s allowed three runs or fewer in six of his last 10 starts, but also surrendered five or more in the other four starts over that span. The 26-year-old has a 4.89 ERA and 1.42 WHIP over 106.2 innings this season. In three career starts vs. the Angels, he is 0-2 with a 4.32 ERA.

Why Bet on LA Angels?

As of Tuesday, Detroit is 2-15 against teams from the American League West this season and has lost 24 of its last 26 games against AL West opponents dating back to August 3, 2018. The Tigers have not finished with a winning record against the AL West since 2014 (18-16), and they are 54 games under .500 against the division since 2015 (48-101, .322).

Halos catcher Jonathan Lucroy suffered a concussion and a broken nose in a nasty home plate collision earlier this month, but he’s wrapping up a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday and should be active on Wednesday. Lucroy, 33, is batting .237/.307/.364 with seven homers over 73 games this season.

Kole Calhoun’s 23 homers as a right fielder are tops in the American League. He has already surpassed 2018 totals in doubles and home runs, tied in RBI and is now just three home runs away from matching a career-high (26 HR) set in 2015. The Halos are 17-6 this season in games he homers. Calhoun, Tim Salmon & Vlad Guerrero are lone right fielders in Angels’ history to have multiple 20+ HR seasons.

Halos pitcher Jose Suarez (2-1) did not factor into the decision against the Orioles on Thursday, pitching 4.1 innings and giving up two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out six. Suarez held Baltimore scoreless over the first three frames before allowing a single run in the fourth inning. He departed with one out in the fifth after allowing back-to-back singles and was charged with his second run when the lead runner eventually came around to score.

The rookie has now allowed three runs or less in seven of his eight starts but has completed five innings only three times in those appearances. He’ll carry a 5.35 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB over 37 innings into this one.
