Three of the better teams at this year’s World Cup landed in Group C. Most experts believe the favorite, Argentina, has a real chance to win the trophy. Those same experts feel Mexico and Poland have enough talent to get to the Round of 16. Is the favorite a lock to win Group C? Can Poland or El Tri take down mighty Argentina? Favorite: Argentina

Lionel Messi heads to Qatar with the best chance he’s ever had of winning the World Cup. The 2014 team was loaded with quality players, but the forward position wasn’t close to being as deep as the 2022 squad. 

In addition to Messi, Paulo Dyballa, Lautaro Martinez, Angel Correa, Joaquin Correa, and Julian Alvarez can knock the ball into the back of the net.

All of those players are also excellent passers, especially Martinez. The midfield is dynamite. Angel Di Maria is the elder statesman. He will support young players Giovani Lo Celso and Nicolas Gonzalez. 

Any way we look at it, Argentina is a deserving favorite to win Group C. 

Upset: Poland

Poland offers lower odds to win the group than Mexico, but the Polish would be more of an upset group winner than El Tri. Poland doesn’t have the overall team that can beat Argentina.

Don’t get us wrong. Robert Lewandowski is fantastic. He remains one of the top strikers in the world. Also, there’s plenty of UEFA league talent on the roster.  

But Poland’s best players, including Lewa, are 30 or above. Not only that, but with so many players in so many leagues and on so many different teams, it could be difficult for Poland to become a cohesive unit in time for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Dark Horse: Mexico

Mexico rates as Group C’s dark horse. On paper, El Tri doesn’t have as strong of a World Cup squad as they have in the past. But the Mexicans figure to be one of the most harmonious sides at the 2022 WC tournament.

The reason? Every player on the roster throws down in the Mexican Liga. These guys know each other. Also, only a single player on the current squad is 30 or older. 

A soccer team won’t succeed unless the players gel to become a single unit. Mexico has that chance.    

Predicted Winner: Argentina | Predicted Second Place: Mexico

History says Mexico finishes no worse than second in Group C. El Tri has stamped their ticket to the knockout stage at every World Cup since 1994.

The seven straight trips to the Round of 16 is better than Argentina, which failed to qualify for the knockout stage in 2002, which is why El Tri has the best chance of beating Messi and his mates and winning the group. 

But this Argentinian side is loaded. Without a doubt, this is the best Argentina team since, maybe, the 1986 squad led by Diego Maradona. 

Neither Messi nor Di Maria must be the focal point of the team. Allowing Messi and Di Maria to create, instead of having to shoot every time they touch the ball, makes Argentina more dynamic. 

The Argentinians will win Group C. Mexico finishes second.
