Series History

It’s the 119th meeting on Saturday. Texas is one of two Big 12 programs with a winning record against Oklahoma and leads the series, 63-50-5. The series, which began in 1900, has been played in Dallas since 1912 and at the State Fair since 1929. Texas and Oklahoma will meet as AP-ranked opponents for the first time since 2021 with the Longhorns ranked higher than the Sooners for the first time since 2009. Last year, Texas won 49-0 behind 289 yards and four touchdowns from Quinn Ewers. It was OU’s most-lopsided shutout loss ever and the highest-scoring game for Texas in the series.

Why Bet on Oklahoma?

The Sooners (5-0) trounced Iowa State 50-20 last Saturday. Dillon Gabriel passed for 366 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two scores as Oklahoma got through its trap game unscathed. The Sooners lost to Iowa State in 2017 and 2020 and have had several other close games against the Cyclones in recent years. Iowa State looked as if it might have another upset in the works, but Oklahoma shut the door by allowing 82 yards and five first downs in the second half.

It marked only the seventh time Iowa State allowed more than 40 points since the start of the 2017 season (a span of 81 games) and only the second time ISU has allowed 50 points in a game since the 2015 season. Oklahoma gained 523 yards of total offense (366 passing, 157 rushing) tonight, its most total yards vs. Iowa State since the 2015 meeting (684 total yards [405 passing, 279 rushing]).

Gabriel will make his Red River Rivalry debut on Saturday. He ranks fourth nationally in passing TDs (15) and points responsible for per game (22.8), fifth in completion percentage (75.2) and sixth in pass efficiency rating (189.4).

Defensively, OU has not allowed more than 376 yards of total offense in a game this season (Cincinnati gained 376). Through 20 quarters of play, OU has allowed just five touchdowns and only 54 points (2.7 per quarter and 10.8 per game). Oklahoma has only allowed 10 scores (five touchdowns and five field goals) on 59 possessions. OU has allowed a touchdown in just four of 20 quarters.

This marks the first season since 2011 (both teams were 4-0) in which Oklahoma and Texas are undefeated at the time of their October meeting. That season, No. 3 OU downed No. 11 UT 55-17. OU has won six of its last seven games against Texas and 12 of its last 16 when both teams are ranked in the AP poll. The Sooners are 23-16 in the series under the circumstance.

Why Bet on Texas?

Texas and Oklahoma rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in all-time wins. OU is 939-338-53 (.726) while UT is 941-390-33 (.702).

The Horns (5-0) avoided a trap last Saturday with a 40-14 win over No. 24 Kansas. The Longhorns racked up 661 yards of total offense and featured an extremely balanced attack with 336 rushing yards and 325 passing yards. The Texas defense was stingy throughout the game, allowing just 260 total yards of offense to the Jayhawks.

Jonathan Brooks had a huge game, rushing for a career-high 217 yards on 20 carries and punching in a pair of touchdowns. CJ Baxter was also effective, carrying the ball 16 times for 68 yards. Quinn Ewers went 25-of-35 passing for 325 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing for 40 yards and a pair of scores. Adonai Mitchell was the Longhorns’ leading receiver, catching 10 passes for 141 yards and one touchdown.

It was Ewers’ fourth career 300-yard game. He has rushed for a touchdown in three consecutive games, the first Texas QB to accomplish the feat since Sam Ehlinger in 2018 (Tulsa, USC, TCU). Ewers had his streak of consecutive passes without an interception end at 245, the second-longest streak in program history (Sam Ehlinger, 308).

The Longhorns improved to 5-0 to start a season for the first time since 2009. Texas earned the program’s 150th victory in Big 12 Conference play and improved their all-time Big 12 record to 150-79 (0.655). Steve Sarkisian improved to 5-0 to start a season for the first time in his head coaching career.

UT has a 34-16-1 record against OU when entering the game unbeaten, including wins in three of the last four games. Texas will be 5-0 when facing Oklahoma for the third time in series history (2008-09) — Texas was 6-0-1 entering the 1923 contest. The higher-ranked team in the AP Top 25 has won 19 of the last 30 matchups (19-10-1) when at least one of the programs are ranked in the AP Top 25. Texas is responsible for eight of the 10 victories when the lower ranked team pulls off the Red River upset.

Texas has won the turnover battle in eight of the last nine meetings with OU, with the two teams tying at one turnover apiece in the 2018 Big 12 Championship Game. The team that wins the turnover battle between Texas and OU is 14-7 since 2000.
