Why Bet on Wyoming?

Wyoming stunned Texas Tech 35-33 in double overtime in Week 1 and then beat Portland State 31-17 this past Saturday. Wide receiver Ayir Asante added a pair of touchdowns against Portland State, the first of his career with the Brown and Gold in the victory. He had 78 yards receiving on the two catches including one for 64 yards, the longest since the 2018 season.

Quarterback Andrew Peasley was 11-of-16 passing with a career-high three touchdown passes and one interception. Peasley exited due to a shoulder issue but he appears to have avoided a serious injury. Running back Sam Scott added a career-high 70 yards rushing on 11 carries.

Kicker John Hoyland connected on a 56-yard field goal in the third quarter. He’s now 3-for-3 on field goals this season with two of them coming from 56 yards away. Hoyland now has two of the three longest field goals in the nation this season.

“I think (Asante) can have a big impact,” coach Craig Bohl said, “He’s really smooth. He catches the ball well. He has really good speed. He’s one of the fastest players on the team. John Hoyland is coming up big again and again. Two 56-yarders is really impressive.”

Defensive lineman Cole Godbout recorded a sack in the first quarter, his first of the season. It was the ninth of his career. He added another 1.5 tackles for loss, giving him 24 for his career, which moved him into a tie for ninth in school history with Ward Dobbs.

Bohl said after the game he expects to have NIU transfer RB Harrison Waylee available against Texas. As a sophomore in 2022, Waylee earned Third Team All-Mid-American Conference honors. Waylee led NIU in rushing with 899 rushing yards on 165 carries and scored five rushing touchdowns. The Cowboys’ running game has been a mixed bag through two games with three touchdowns (one by Peasley) and three fumbles.

“I think that we don’t really listen to too much outside noise about what other people think about us or what they expect because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter,” Asante said of the daunting challenge of facing Texas. “We’ve got to go out there and play our game and we have yet to play our clean game, put that on film.”.

Why Bet on Texas?

Texas comes off its biggest win in years, a 34-24 upset at No. 3 Alabama to rise to No. 4 in the new poll to snap Alabama’s 21-game home winning streak. Sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers completed 24-of-38 passes for 349 passing yards and three touchdowns. Ewers extended his string of consecutive passes without an interception to 184, the second-longest streak in program history. He connected with Xavier Worthy for a 44-yard touchdown, the second-straight game in which he has thrown a 40-plus yard touchdown pass.

Ewers threw multiple touchdown passes for the third-straight game and seventh time in his career. He had his third career 300-yard game and second in the last three games. It marked the 22nd touchdown of Worthy’s career and fifth of 40-plus yards.

Texas collected its first non-conference road win against an AP Top-3 opponent and first road win against an AP Top-3 opponent since defeating Arkansas 15-14 in 1969. The Longhorns improved their all-time road record against AP Top-3 teams to 3-6. The Tide had won 57 consecutive regular-season games versus non-conference opponents.

Texas had five sacks in the game, the most surrendered by the Crimson Tide since 2021 (at Auburn) and the most at home since 2015 (Tennessee). The five sacks were the most for a non-conference foe at Bryant-Denny Stadium since 2012 (6, Western Kentucky).

The Longhorns are ranked in the top five for the first time since beginning the 2010 campaign at No. 5. Texas holds a 5-0 advantage over Wyoming in the all-time series and will face the Cowboys in Austin for the first time since 2012. The Longhorns have averaged 32.6 points per game in the previous five games against the Cowboys. UT is 14-1 against current programs from the Mountain West Conference.
