The Houston Open returns this season under a new name, the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open, the penultimate event of the 2021 PGA Tour season. The tournament has been a part of the PGA Tournament schedule since 1946 under various sponsors.
Tournament play begins on Thursday, November 11th, and concludes on Sunday, November 14th. The event is played at Memorial Golf Course near downtown Houston.
Carlos Ortiz is the defending champion, picking up his first PGA Tour victory here last season with a two-stroke victory over Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama. Ortiz won’t be in the field this week to defend his title after withdrawing from the tournament with a shoulder injury.
The winner of the tournament receives the coveted 500 FedEx Cup points as well as a $1.35 million of the $7.5 million purse. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming Houston Open event so you can make your bets against the PGA Tour odds.

Memorial Golf Course
Memorial Golf Course opened its doors originally as a nine-hole track in 1912. Following a complete redesign, the course opened in 1936 as an 18-hole track. Memorial Park hosted the Houston Open in 1947 and then again from 1951-63 before going through a $7 million dollar renovation in 1995.
The course is a par-70 and stretches 7,412 yards. The renovation was completed by architect Tom Doak with consultation from Brooks Koepka. Played as a second-shot golf course, the course features strategic bunkering and unique green contours.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open Field
Koepka highlights a relatively weak field compared to last week’s tournament. The four-time major champion looks to regain some of his game before the holiday break after a sluggish start to the fall. Koepka will be joined by 13 other major champions in the field this week.
Texas native Scottie Scheffler is in town along with surging Matthew Wolff. Wolff was the 36-hole leader heading into the weekend at Mayakoba, and Scheffler wrapped up last week with a solo fourth-place finish.
Lee Westwood is teeing it up on the PGA for the first time his fall season. Westwood put together a fantastic 2020-21 year highlighted by a pair of solo seconds at the Arnold Palmer and PLAYERS.
Sponsorship exemptions were given to Houston-area Texas residents MJ Daffue and Shawn Stafani, along with Chase Koepka and Arizona State senior Cameron Sisk.
Players to Target
The top five players entering the tournament this week are Sam Burns (+1600), Scottie Scheffler(+1800), Sungjae Im (+2000), Cameron Smith (+2200), and Matthew Wolff (+2200). Of those top five, we will target Wolff as the most likely to walk away with the trophy.
Some darkhorse players we like are Maverick McNealy (+4500), Chad Ramey (+10000), and Joel Dahmen (+11000). McNealy has cashed in on four of five events during the wrap-around season, including a solo second at the Fortinet Championship.
Ramey has a pair of T20 finishes this fall, highlighted by a T14 at the Shriners. Dahmen concluded Mayakoba T45 and has made the cut in all three of his fall events played. If Dahmen can improve his final-round scoring, look for him to be in contention for his second PGA Tour victory on Sunday.
