One of the most historic meets in the United States starts up this week when the best in the world descend upon Saratoga Springs in New York for the 2023 Saratoga Summer Meet. The Saratoga meet is such a big deal that The Spa, as horseplayers call it, will run a grade 3 on Thursday.

Connections for eleven 2 year old fillies hope to win Saratoga’s first graded race. No doubt, Todd Pletcher trained Wire On Tap will go off the chalk.

Steve Asmussen and Mark Casse project to have the second and third choices in Closing Act, which Asmussen has already campaigned to an undefeated 2-0 record, and Sugar Treat, which won at first asking for Casse.

Others expected to run include Saratoga Secret, Union Suit, Kiss for Luck, Dancing Diana, and Carmelina.

Kelso Stakes | Grade 3

Connections for just 2 runners have confirmed for the Kelso. Arnaud Delacour will saddle Chez Pierre. The 5-year-old gelding won the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile at Keeneland in April. Chez Pierre followed up the Maker’s Mark Mile victory with a third in the Grade 3 Poker.

Filo Di Arianna, a Mark Casse trained 7-year-old sired in Brazil, finished ahead of Chez Pierre in the Grade 3 Poker. Filo Di Arianna won 3 straight at Woodbine around this time in 2022. No matter the other runners that will enter, both Chez Pierre and Filo Di Arianna have big shots to take this.

Mark Casse trained Fev Rover won the Grade 2 Nassau in the last. Fev has a shot, but unless a runner pushes In Italian early, the Brown runner should go gate-to-wire.

D. Wayne Lukas goes with Major Blue. Gaslight Dancer, from the Mike Maker barn, and Thomas Morley trained Son of a Birch will also run.
