Then on Saturday, Woodbine in Toronto runs the Grade 3 Ontario Derby and Keeneland showcases three year olds in the Grade 2 Raven Run. Then on Sunday, Keeneland runs the Grade 3 Dowager for three and four-year-old fillies.

Top Stakes Races Third Week of October: Friday, October 20th – Sunday, October 22nd, 2023

Knickerbocker Stakes | Grade 3

1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year olds & up
Friday, October 20th, 2023
Belmont Park, Elmont, New York

Chad Brown plans on entering Rockemperor. The Holy Roman sired runner finished second in the Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes in the last. Rockemperor should go off either first or second.

The Knickerbocker, though, is a deep race. Although Rockemperor will be one of the choices, don’t settle on the projected chalk unless you really believe the Brown runner shows its best.

Other contenders include Wicked Finn, second in the listed stakes Red Bank, the horse that finished ahead of Wicked Finn, Neil Drysdale trained St Anthony, and King Cause, a Mike Maker trained runner that struggled in the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf.

Commander, Siege of Boston, and Master Piece all have chances. Richard Dutrow Jr. trains Master Piece. Dutrow recently came back from a decade long suspension. The trainer has been winning at a decent clip since the return. So if Master Piece offers overlay odds, consider.

Every year, the Ontario Derby is one of Woodbine’s most popular graded stakes races. This year should be no different.

Although connections have yet to decide to run in the Ontario Derby, we can be sure the race will be competitive. Last year, Ironstone beat The Minkster and Bringer of Rain.

Then in 2021, the top three finishers were Frosted Over, Riptide Rock, and Artie’s Storm. Keep your eyes peeled for this year’s Ontario Derby field.

Raven Run Stakes | Grade 2

Since 2004, the Raven Run has been a last gasp attempt for 3 year old fillies to prove they belong in the Breeders Cup Sprint field. This year, Alva Starr could go off the chalk.

The Brett Brinkman trained miss crossed the finish line first in the Grade 2 Prioress in her last. Alva Starr won the Dashing Beauty Stakes in the race before. In 5 career starts, Alva Starr has won 3 and finished second twice.

Dazzling Blue, trained by Brad Cox and campaigned by Juddmonte Farms, hopes to overtake Alva in this. Blue finished third to Alva Starr in the Prioress.

Others that will attract action include Lily Poo, Simply Stated, Nom de Plume, Vahva, and Apple Picker.

Dowager Stakes | Grade 3

Sunday’s Dowager should be a highly competitive race. Graham Motion trained Vergara, which won the Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon in the last, projects as the chalk.

Joel Rosario rides and no other runner won a graded race in their last. Two fillies that finished behind Vergara could also perform well in this. Saffie Joseph trained Transient finished second. Personal Best, trained by Claude McGaughey, finished fourth.

If you’re looking for a contender that may offer overlay odds, consider Motion’s other entrant, Romagna Mia. Johnny V takes the call and the last was decent, a third place finish in the Grade 1 Beverly D.
