Can the Orioles Upset the Dodgers? Flaherty’s Impact, Odds, and Expert Predictions

It’s a potential World Series preview and two of the best lineups in the majors facing off in a series opener on Tuesday night as the Baltimore Orioles visit the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are solid favorites on the MLB odds behind trade acquisition Jack Flaherty.

Baltimore at LA Dodgers: 2024 MLB Expert Analysis

Opening MLB Lines Subject to Change: Dodgers -214, Orioles +157 (total 9)
Expert Prediction: Dodgers 5, Orioles 3

Baltimore Orioles +157

The Orioles have not played that well since the All-Star break and now find themselves trailing the Yankees in the AL East, although it’s still very close. Baltimore hasn’t won three consecutive games since July 14-20, sandwiched around the All-Star break. On the flip side, the team hasn’t lost three in a row since July 21-24.

The Birds enter off a 6-3 loss at home to Houston on Sunday to split that four-game series and potential AL playoff preview. It was the fourth time in the past eight games the O’s were held to three or fewer hits.

“I think we’ve been struggling to put good at-bats together as a team,” said Ramon Urías, who is hitting .298 (14-for-47) with 13 RBIs over his past 16 games amid the offense’s overall scuffles.

Team Injuries

Regulars Cedric Mullins and Ryan Mountcastle were out of the lineup with minor injuries. Mountcastle Thursday night’s game with a sore wrist, and Mullins left Friday night’s game with a strained left quadriceps. On Sunday, the Orioles added Triple-A Norfolk outfielder Daniel Johnson to their taxi squad while Mullins continued to be evaluated.

Team Homers

Baltimore has eight players with at least 10 home runs, tied with the Astros for the most in MLB:

  • Anthony Santander (38)
  • Gunnar Henderson (33)
  • Colton Cowser (19)
  • Adley Rutschman and Jordan Westburg (18)
  • Mountcastle and Mullins (13)
  • Ryan O’Hearn (12)

The team record is 10 players, done in 2019, 2000, and 1998. Henderson and Santander are one of two duos with at least 30 home runs, along with the Yankees’ Aaron Judge and Juan Soto. Baltimore did not have a player reach 30 homers last season, and this year marks the first time since 2021 that the team has had multiple players with 30+ home runs.

Henderson’s 33 homers are one shy of tying Cal Ripken, Jr. (1991) and Miguel Tejada (2004) for the most by an Orioles shortstop in a single season. Henderson is also on pace to score 126 times; Roberto Alomar is the only player in team history (since 1954) with more than 122 runs scored in a season, when he set the record with 132 runs in 1996.

Cole Irvin on the Hill

It’s lefty (6-5, 4.82 ERA) on the mound Tuesday. The Orioles called Irvin up from Triple-A Norfolk last Wednesday to make his first start with the big club since June 30. Irvin was charged with two runs over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Mets. The 30-year-old gave up five hits, including a third-inning solo shot to Mark Vientos and managed to work into the fifth inning to spare Baltimore’s bullpen. He struck out two and also issued a pair of walks.

Injuries have hit the Baltimore rotation hard recently, which has resulted in Irvin getting his third trial in a starting role despite the fact that he has produced an 8.80 ERA in 30.2 innings over his last nine outings in the majors. He’ll be at risk of moving to the bullpen — if not being removed from the 40-man roster — as soon as Zach Eflin (shoulder) and/or Grayson Rodriguez (lat) return from the injured list.

Irvin has made two career starts vs. the Dodgers and doesn’t have a decision with a 4.70 ERA in 7.2 innings.

Los Angeles Dodgers -214

The Dodgers should win the NL West yet again even with Arizona and San Diego within striking distance. LA won for the sixth time in seven games Sunday, 3-1 over Tampa Bay. After Shohei Ohtani was hit on the left forearm by a sinker from Richard Lovelady in the bottom of the eighth and the score tied 1-1, Mookie Betts drove the first pitch he saw from the left-hander over the wall in left-center to put the Dodgers back on top.

Mookie Betts

It was Betts’ 13th homer of the season and his third since returning to the lineup after missing nearly two months due to a broken left hand. Betts has posted multiple RBI in three of his last four games and has recorded an extra-base hit in four of his last five. Since returning to action, Betts is hitting .275/.321/.529 with three homers, 11 RBIs and seven runs scored in 57 plate appearances.

Shohei Ohtani

Ohtani is the sixth player in big league history to reach the 40-40 mark and is gunning to become the first 50-50 man. He ranks in the top five in the majors in home runs (41, 2nd), extra-base hits (76, 2nd), total bases (312, T-2nd), runs (100, 5th), walks (69, 4th) and stolen bases (40, 2nd). Ohtani’s 12 stolen bases in August without being caught are the most in a month by a Dodger since Rafael Furcal’s 12-for-12 in 2007 (September/October).

Jack Flaherty on the Hill

It’s righty (10-5, 3.00 ERA, who pitched for the Orioles for a bit last year, on the mound for Los Angeles. Flaherty picked up the win over the Mariners last Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk over 5.2 innings while striking out five. Flaherty hit Randy Arozarena with a pitch to lead off the second inning and Arozarena would eventually come around to score Seattle’s first run on sac fly from Dominic Canzone.

Flaherty then kept the Mariners off the board over the next three frames before allowing the first two men to reach in the sixth. Flaherty fell one out shy of his second quality start as a member of the Dodgers, but he did improve his streak of pitching at least five innings to 22 starts. He’s gone 3-0 in four starts since being acquired by his new club, posting a 3.22 ERA over that stretch.

This will be Flaherty’s first career start vs. Baltimore. He was 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA in nine starts last year for the Orioles and then signed with Detroit in free agency this past winter. The Tigers shipped him to the Dodgers at last month’s trade deadline.

Why Bet on Los Angeles?

Chris Taylor was not in Tuesday’s starting lineup. On Monday, Taylor received his first start since coming off the injured list Friday. The super-utility man produced the biggest hit of the contest Monday against Baltimore, belting a sixth-inning grand slam that turned a two-run Dodgers deficit into a two-run lead. Taylor started at shortstop before moving to left field late in the game, but Miguel Rojas started at shortstop Tuesday while David Peralta was in left field.

Freddie Freeman continues to make a case for another MVP Award as he was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and two runs scored in Monday’s victory over the Orioles. He’s collected multiple hits in seven of his last 17 games, going 23-for-70 (.329) during that span. The veteran slugger is up to 52 extra-base hits and 74 runs scored with a .952 OPS through 426 plate appearances as of Tuesday.

It’s lefty Julio Urias on the mound here. Urias (7-5, 4.35 ERA) picked up the win in last Friday’s 6-0 victory over the Mets, giving up one hit and one walk over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven. Urias nearly unraveled in the first inning. Brandon Nimmo led off the bottom of the frame with a drive to right-center field that was initially ruled a homer, but upon review it was determined to have hit the top of the padded wall and caromed back into play. Pete Alonso then drew a two-out walk, but Urias shut the door on the rally and proceeded to baffle Mets hitters the rest of the way.

Urias has tossed back-to-back quality starts on either side of the All-Star break: “I haven’t done a good job of attacking and throwing first-pitch strikes. I think I’ve missed that this season and I think these last two starts, I’ve made a lot of adjustments to fix that. … I watched [Brandon Nimmo’s leadoff double] on video and you can honestly see that I didn’t make my adjustment. From then, you could see that I made those adjustments and something clicked, to where I feel like myself on top of the mound.”

Urias has a 10.38 ERA and no decisions in 4.1 career innings vs. Baltimore.

Why Bet on Baltimore?

The Orioles have two winning streaks of at least seven games this year; Atlanta (4x) and Tampa Bay (2x) are the only other teams with multiple win streaks of at least seven games this season. Baltimore’s 33 comeback wins rank tied with Cincinnati for the most in MLB this year and their 69 come-from-behind victories since the start of 2022 are second behind the LA Dodgers (70) for the most in MLB.

Will the Orioles have starting outfielder Cedric Mullins and first baseman Ryan Mountcastle for this one? Neither started Tuesday’s game. Mountcastle has now started just two of six games since returning from the injured list and appears to have lost his primary first base job to Ryan O’Hearn. Mullins has missed three straight with a quad injury. Aaron Hicks started in center field for Baltimore on Tuesday in place of Mullins again.

Anthony Santander had his eight-game hitting streak snapped in Monday’s loss but has two multi-homer games this year and his 12 career multi-homer games are tied for ninth-most in O’s history (since 1954).

Reliever Cionel Pérez was activated from the 15-day injured list before Tuesday’s game following a two-week absence due to left forearm soreness. The 27-year-old southpaw holds a 4.45 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 22/16 K/BB ratio across 30 1/3 innings (33 appearances) this season.

It’s Dean Kremer on the mound Wednesday, his 20th start of the season, 11th at home, and first career start against the Dodgers. Kremer (10-4) picked up the win last Friday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings in a 5-2 victory over the Marlins. He struck out eight. The right-hander generated 30 called or swinging strikes among his 97 pitches en route to his ninth quality start of the year. In eight starts since the beginning of June he’s posted a 4.60 ERA and 2.2 HR/9, but also a 1.18 WHIP and 52:10 K:BB through 45 innings.

In nine career Interleague starts, Kremer owns a 7-2 record with a 3.58 ERA (20 ER/50.1 IP) and five quality starts. He has a 5-2 record with a 5.07 ERA (31 ER/55.0 IP) in 10 assignments at Oriole Park this season. Kremer works with a deep six-pitch repertoire, consisting of a four-seam fastball, two-seam fastball, cutter, slider, curveball, and changeup. He relies primarily on his fastballs and his cutter, throwing either a fastball or cutter 72.3% of the time this season.
