2023 MLB All-Star Game Odds, Analysis, and Betting Prediction

The 93rd Major League Baseball All-Star Game is being played from T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Tuesday night and the American League is a short favorite to win its 10th straight Midsummer Classic over the National League despite being without such injured stars as Mike Trout, Aaron Judge and Yordan Alvarez. With that in mind, let’s see the MLB betting odds for this game.

Game History

This will be the third time that the Mariners host an All-Star Game; the previous games were in 1979 at the Kingdome and 2001 at Safeco Field, which was renamed T-Mobile Park before the 2019 season. The National League won 7-6 at the Kingdome and the AL won 4-1 at Safeco. The AL leads the series all-time 47-43 with two ties.

St. Petersburg, Fla. (Tampa Bay Rays) is the only current MLB city that has not yet hosted an All-Star Game. The game MVP is called the Ted Williams Award. Only two players have been selected MVP from the losing team: Brooks Robinson (1966) and Carl Yastrzemski (1970). No MVP Award was given in 2002. In the 58-year history of the award, five players have won the honor twice.

Why Bet on the National League?

The Dodgers and Braves account for two-thirds of the NL starting lineup, with each club having three of its members included. NL MVP favorite Ronald Acuna Jr. of Atlanta leads off. He on-pace for 39 home runs and 75 stolen bases this season. No player in MLB history has ever recorded 30+ home runs and 60+ stolen bases within a single-season. Acuna the N.L. in stolen bases and OPS and is seeking to become the third player since integration in 1947 to lead their league in both categories. He’d join: Willie Mays, twice (1957-58) and Rickey Henderson (1990).

How deep is the NL? MLB batting leader Luis Arraez of the Marlins has flirted with .400 all season and also recorded the first cycle in franchise history in just his 12th game in a Marlins uniform. Arraez’s performance made him an easy selection for his second straight Midsummer Classic, and his first as the starting second baseman. He bats sixth for the NL. The 26-year-old Arraez also could become the first player since 1900 to be the batting champion in the AL and NL in consecutive seasons.

Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll was voted a starter for this year’s Midsummer Classic, just one year after appearing in the Futures Game. Carroll is now one of 11 newcomers to a group of 222 players who have been selected to play in both the Futures Game and the Major League All-Star Game.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson is in charge of the NL All-Stars. Frankly, the NL is overdue a win in this game as it last beat the AL 8-0 in 2012 in Kansas City. The Braves topped the field with eight All-Star selections this year but not all of them will play. Those eight All-Stars were the most by any team since the 2012 Rangers also had eight.

The NL starting pitcher will be Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen. Gallen, who is tied for the Major League lead in wins, is 11-3 with a 3.04 ERA on the season. In 118.1 innings pitched, he has permitted 45 runs (40 earned) on 101 hits with 23 walks and 125 strikeouts. Gallen has also thrived following a loss by his club, going 7-0 with a 1.80 ERA on the season in 10 such starts.

The 27-year-old, who is an All-Star for the first time in his career, will become just the third D-backs hurler (fourth time) to start a Midsummer Classic, joining Hall of Famer Randy Johnson (2000-01) and Curt Schilling (2002).

  1. Ronald Acuña Jr., RF (ATL)
  2. Freddie Freeman, 1B (LAD)
  3. Mookie Betts, CF (LAD)
  4. J.D. Martinez, DH (LAD)
  5. Nolan Arenado, 3B (STL)
  6. Luis Arraez, 2B (MIA)
  7. Sean Murphy, C (ATL)
  8. Corbin Carroll, LF (AZ)
  9. Orlando Arcia, SS (ATL)

Why Bet on the American League?

Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker is in charge of the AL team and has selected the YankeesGerrit Cole as his starting pitcher. It marks the first career All-Star start for the six-time All-Star. Cole will become the 12th different Yankees pitcher (20th time) to start the Midsummer Classic, and the first since Roger Clemens started the last All-Star Game played in Seattle during his Cy Young Award-winning 2001 season.

In 19 starts on the season, Cole is 9-2 with a 2.85 ERA. In 117.0 innings, Cole has allowed just 39 runs (37 earned) on 97 hits with 34 walks and 123 strikeouts. New York is 14-5 on the season in Cole’s 19 games started and the 14 victories are tied for the second-most by a club in a pitcher’s starts this season. In addition, the Yankees are 8-0 on the season in games started by Cole following a loss, and he is 5-0 with a 2.13 ERA in those eight starts.

Texas will become the first team in 47 years to have five position players start in the All-Star Game after the Rangers’ Adolis Garcia was picked Friday to join the AL lineup as an injury replacement. He and Baltimore Orioles outfielder Austin Hays were named as injury replacements for New York’s Aaron Judge and Los Angeles’ Mike Trout.

“That’s going to be cool. I’m happy and proud for these guys,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “I think it’s cool for Rangers fans to see their guys out there on the field. (Five) is a lot. It’ll be pretty cool to see. When you look at their numbers, they are all well deserving of being out there.”

The 1939 New York Yankees and the 1956, 1957 and 1976 Reds are the only other clubs to have that many in a single midsummer classic.

Garcia joins Rangers catcher Jonah Heim, second baseman Marcus Semien, shortstop Corey Seager and third baseman Josh Jung in the AL lineup for Tuesday’s game. The non-Rangers are Tampa Bay first baseman Yandy Díaz and outfielder Randy Arozarena, Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani and Hays.

  1. Marcus Semien, 2B (TEX)
  2. Shohei Ohtani, DH (LAA)
  3. Randy Arozarena, LF (TB)
  4. Corey Seager, SS (TEX)
  5. Yandy Díaz, 1B (TB)
  6. Adolis García, RF (TEX)
  7. Austin Hays, CF (BAL)
  8. Josh Jung, 3B (TEX)
  9. Jonah Heim, C (TEX)
