Season Series

The Suns and Kings will play a total of five times this season because of an In-Season Tournament matchup. Sacramento has won both so far. The game in Phoenix was on Dec. 8 and the Kings won 114-106. De’Aaron Fox scored 23 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter, and Domantas Sabonis added 15 points and 17 rebounds and the Kings pulled away late. Devin Booker led the Suns with 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting and added seven rebounds and seven assists. The Suns — playing without stars Kevin Durant (ankle) and Bradley Beal (back) — led 59-50 at halftime but the Kings outscored Phoenix 33-12 in the third. Kings assistant coach Jay Triano was an assistant coach for the Suns for two seasons from 2016-17 and head coach from 2017-18.

Why Bet on Sacramento Kings?

This is the last game of a five-game trip for the Kings, who are 2-2 on it following a wild 143-142 OT loss in Milwaukee on Sunday as Damian Lillard hit the winning three-pointer from about 30 feet out at time expired. After crossing half court, Lillard said he glanced at the clock before making a move to set up his game-winner, which marked the 2,500th 3-pointer of his career.

“I just changed direction and got into space where I could get a good look at the rim. It was a pretty comfortable shot,” he said. “These are the kinds of games that you don’t want to let them slip. It’s a quality win against a good team.”

De’Aaron Fox scored a game-high 34 points for the Kings, who haven’t won in Milwaukee since Nov. 25, 2015. Fox, the reigning Clutch Player of the Year, scored with 2.1 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime. De’Aaron Fox has 23 games with 25 points or more, 19th in the league. The seventh-year guard ranks 11th in the NBA in 25-point and five-assists performances this season with 16. He has notched 25 points, five dimes and a pair of steals in eight games this season, tied for fifth in the Association.

Fox is averaging 4.9 free throws made (20th) and 6.8 free throws attempted (16th) per game. He ranks tied for 15th in the NBA in fouls drawn per contest (5.1), including 1.7 personal fouls drawn off drives, which ranks tied for fifth. Fox also is averaging 3.2 deflections per contest, which ranks tied for fourth in the league while ranking seventh in steals per game (1.56).

Domantas Sabonis totaled 21 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds in the loss for his 10th triple-double of the year. s Sabonis has posted averages of 22.6 points, 13.1 rebounds and 8.8 assists per game while shooting 65.6% from the floor over his last 16 games. In that stretch, Sabonis leads the league in rebounding, double-doubles (14) and triple-doubles (8).

After missing the past game, Kevin Huerter had 26 points and 10 boards – those were a season high. Huerter’s averages in January are pretty underwhelming at 8.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 triples per game.

Malik Monk added 28 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Monk has scored 20+ points in 22 games with the Kings, which is the fifth-most by a reserve in franchise history. Dating back to last season, Monk is second in the NBA in games with 20 points and five assists off the bench.

Keegan Murray left the loss with a hip contusion and wasn’t able to return, so Monk stepped up off the bench. It was his 12th game of the season with at least 20 points, and his second-highest scoring game of the campaign. He’s been hot in January with averages of 18.4 points, 6.1 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 2.6 three-pointers, and he’s a Sixth Man of the Year contender.

It’s not clear if Murray will play in this game. He entered Sunday averaging 19.2 points on 53 percent shooting from the floor and 45 percent on three-pointers over the past month. Murray has had 10 20-point games this season. Since joining the NBA last season, Murray has scored 20 points or better in 23 career contests and the Kings are 21-2 in those games.

The Kings would like to add at the Trade Deadline but have told teams calling about Murray that he’s not available. Murray is only in Year 2 of his rookie deal, giving the Kings an affordable cornerstone with considerable remaining upside. Murray is also versatile positionally with his ability to defend four positions.

Why Bet on Phoenix Suns?

The Suns finally have their Big 3 healthy and have won back-to-back games by double digits because of it, coming off a 127-116 win in Portland on Sunday. The Blazers had just eight available players. The Blazers announced before the game that Jerami Grant and Matisse Thybulle would not play because of illness.

Devin Booker led Phoenix with 34 points. Booker was 14 of 22 from the field — with five of the misses coming on 1-of-6 3-point shooting — and made all five of his free throws. He also had seven assists and six rebounds and no turnovers. Booker has been operating as a point guard of late, resulting in an uptick in his assists. He’s averaging 25.0 points, 6.6 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game over his last 10 contests. Booker is 1-of-3 players this season to rank in the top-11 in both scoring (11th) and assists (7th). The Suns are 8-3 this season when he scores at least 30.

Kevin Durant had 21 points, six assists and five rebounds. Durant has failed to reach the 25-point mark in three of his last four outings since returning from a hamstring problem that sidelined him from three games, so there’s a chance he’s still not at his 100 percent. Bradley Beal had 23 and Grayson Allen 20. Allen has been playing well of late and is averaging 14.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game over his last 10 contests. He ranks 6th the NBA in 3-pt shooting percentage at 46.2%, while Durant ranks 2nd at 47.1%.

Allen is in the final year of a two-year, $18.7 million deal and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2024. That appeals to a trade partner as the Suns are looking for a true point guard, but his play this season also makes Allen desirable. He’s having a career year in becoming the fifth starter with Booker, Durant, Beal and Jusuf Nurkic. Suns coach Frank Vogel has preached generating more 3-point attempts. The Suns are 26th in the NBA in hoisting 3s per game.

“We’ve had too many games where teams shot 40 to 50 threes and we shot in the mid-20s and it’s tough to keep up in the modern NBA,” Vogel said.

The Suns‘ Big 3 rotation was slow to form with all three players dealing with various injuries in 2023-24, particularly Beal, who has been limited to 15 games thus far. However, in recent games, Vogel seems to have settled on a substitution pattern he likes. When Phoenix shoots a better percentage from the field than its opponent, it is 16-6 as opposed to 4-12 when not. The Suns are 11-4 when making more three-pointers than their opponent.
