Season Series

First meeting of four. The Mavericks are 76-56 (.576) all-time against the Timberwolves franchise (40-26 at home, 36-30 on the road). Dallas has won two of the last five, five out of 10, 10 of the last 16, and 40 of the last 60 meetings with the Timberwolves. The Mavericks lost the 2022-23 season series 2-1, however. Luka Doncic is averaging 23.0 points (his lowest scoring average against any team), 7.9 rebounds and 6.9 assists in 13 career games (8-5 record) against Minnesota.

Why Bet on Minnesota?

Minnesota played without leading scorer and borderline MVP candidate Anthony Edwards due to a hip injury on Monday and had a six-game winning streak snapped in a 121-107 loss at New Orleans. Troy Brown started for Edwards and had five points and six rebounds in 27 minutes. Brown has provided the Timberwolves with depth contributions this season, and he has stepped up even more as of late, averaging 8.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 23.1 minutes over his last 10 outings.

Jaden McDaniels had 12 points and three rebounds in 27 minutes as he returned after missing the last eight games with an ankle injury, ending as one of five Timberwolves with a double-digit point total while leading all bench players in minutes played in the defeat. McDaniels has tallied 10 or more points in eight contests this season as he continues to work his way back into the rotation. Jordan McLaughlin finished with three points and an assist in 8 minutes, 23 seconds after sitting out 15 games with a sprained MCL in his right knee.

Karl-Anthony Towns had 17 points and 12 rebounds. Towns was one of three Timberwolves to score 17 points in Monday’s defeat, with Mike Conley (17/5/7 with four 3-pointers) and Naz Reid (17/6/2/1 with three 3-pointers) being the others. Towns has hauled in 10 or more boards in 13 games this season, finishing with a double-double in 12 of those outings.

Rudy Gobert, who has been dominant this season, had eight points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two turnovers. He was limited to less than 26 minutes by foul trouble, which led to the Wolves being overwhelmed in the paint by Zion Williamson and Jonas Valančiūnas. Recently, Gobert eclipsed 1,500 career rebounds to become the fourth active player in the NBA with 1,500+ blocks, joining Brook Lopez, Anthony Davis and DeAndre Jordan.

Clearly missing Edwards, Minnesota shot only 44 percent from the field and turned the ball over 14 times, which turned into 21 points for the Pelicans. “We kind of fought the game a little bit tonight,” McLaughlin said. Edwards is questionable Thursday.

While it didn’t happen Tuesday, the Timberwolves have now shot 50% or better from the field while holding opponents to 40% or worse from the field in six games this season. They are 6-0 in those. Minnesota has held opponents to 40% of worse shooting 11 times overall, the most by any team in the NBA this season with the next closest team being Oklahoma City (six games). Minnesota is now 10-1 when holding teams to 40.0% shooting or below.

The Timberwolves have been stingy on the defensive end this season, only allowing teams to average 49.9 points per game in the second half, while allowing opponents just .413 shooting percentage from the floor, both are best in the league.

Why Bet on Dallas?

Despite playing without All-Star guard Kyrie Irving, the Mavericks beat the Lakers 127-125 on Tuesday. Luka Doncic was great per usual with 33 points, 17 assists and six rebounds in 43 minutes. Doncic led all players in Tuesday’s game in scoring and assists while finishing with his second game of the year with at least 30 points and 17 assists. Doncic has handed out at least 10 assists on eight occasions this year while surpassing the 30-point mark in 16 contests. Doncic has posted at least 30 points and 10 assists in four of his last five games. He has played 40-plus minutes in three consecutive games for the first time since Games 5-7 in the first round of the 2021 playoffs against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Doncic continues to battle nagging injuries: “I don’t know how I played,” he said after Tuesday’s win. “I slept very little today. Everything hurts. I’m getting old, man, but we got two back-to-back wins, which is amazing, especially against a team like the Lakers. So I’m really proud of these guys.”

Coach Jason Kidd said he’s determined to back off on the minutes that Doncic plays. But that’s easier said than done. Kidd and his players love winning, which they have done for four games in a row.

“(It’s important) for him to learn how to rest on offense when he gets double-teamed,” Kidd said. “And that’s what he’s doing. He’s getting double-teamed at the top of the floor and once he does that, it’s advantage basketball. But we do want to get healthy. We don’t want to play him 44 minutes right now.”

Tim Hardaway Jr. had a season-high 32 points in Tuesday’s win as he returned after missing the previous game with back spasms. Hardaway has tallied at least 30 points in two games this season, connecting on four or more threes in nine outings. Dante Exum blew up with 26 points on Tuesday. In the last three games, when he’s been pressed into a bigger role because of the injuries, he’s averaged 21.7 points, 5.3 assists and 4.7 rebounds. “He’s been amazing for us,” Doncic said.

Irving hasn’t played since Dec. 8 due to a heel injury. Kidd said Tuesday that Irving is wearing a protective walking boot and using crutches, and the point guard doesn’t have a return timetable. Irving, who is averaging 23.0 points and 5.2 assists per game this season, has been dealing with soreness in his right foot throughout the season.

Key reserves Maxi Kleber (toe) and Josh Green (elbow) have been out for an extended period. Starting small forward Derrick Jones Jr. (quad) sat out against the Lakers. Seth Curry, the fill-in starter at shooting guard, did not play in the second half because of left ankle soreness.
