NFL Preseason Week 3

  • When: August 17 – August 23

Chicago Bears at Seattle Seahawks -5.5 | Thursday, August 18

Chicago played well in their first game, but the Bears gave up 14 points to a Kansas City Chiefs squad that barely played their second string starters on offense. Chicago does have a decent backup QB in Trevor Siemian.

But although Siemian should play okay, the Seahawks figure to cover this spread. Drew Lock completed 11-of-15 for 102 yards and a couple of touchdowns in his first start in a Seahawks uniform. If Lock doesn’t play, Geno Smith will. Both Smith and Lock have regular season starting experience.

5.5 is a lot of points in a preseason game. But the Seahawks offense is playing well and the Bears won’t go all out on either side of the ball. Seattle covers.

Carolina Panthers -2.5 at New England Patriots | Friday, August 19

New England played well in their first preseason game. The Patriots didn’t beat the New York Giants, but the loss wasn’t by a significant amount. NYG bested New England 23-21.

Carolina beat Washington in a road game 23-21. The Panthers have the edge in this because they will play both Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield. But although the Panthers will play their two quarterbacks and New England my keep Mac Jones on the bench, the Patriots figure to win straight up.

New England can’t wait too long before gearing up for the season. Expect Belichick to play more of his starters in week 2 then he did in the first preseason week.

New Orleans Saints at Green Bay Packers -3 | Friday, August 19

Green Bay and New Orleans have spent the week training together. The Packers project as the overall better team this season, but so far at least, quarterback Aaron Rodgers isn’t impressed with his wide receivers.

Dennis Allen, the Saints new head coach, understands defense. He also used to coach the Packers D. Allen will ensure New Orleans keeps this close. The Saints offense should also play better. New Orleans has a shot to win this straight up. Taking the points makes sense.

NFL Preseason Week 2 Pick: New Orleans Saints

Houston Texans -3 at Los Angeles Rams | Friday, August 19

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford started throwing last Thursday. But Stafford’s elbow remains an issue and coach Sean McVay knows that if Los Angeles has any shot of repeating as Super Bowl champs, Stafford must be healthy during the season.

Without Stafford, the Rams’ quarterback room isn’t good. It’s not even mediocre. John Wolford and Bryce Perkins won’t move the football much. Houston should be okay in this game. The Texans are the play to win and cover.
