Copa America Games For Tuesday: In any tournament that has a group stage, we often argue about which games are the most important.

The reality is that they are all important, but it does very often hinge on what happens in the opening game.

My Analysis

Teams that lose their opening game are automatically put into a position where they need to win their second game to stay alive. That said, a game that wins their opener and loses their next game then has all the pressure in their final match in the group stage.

Tuesday sees us head into the second round of games in the group stage, so the pressure is beginning to mount for those that lost their opener.

With that in mind, let’s take a look the odds at the 2 games set to go on Tuesday night.

Canada +117 vs Peru +250

It was a tough start to the 2024 Copa America tournament for Canada, as they had to start their campaign against the defending champions, Argentina.

While they eventually lost 2-0, they did give a solid account of themselves, missing a couple of gilt-edged opportunities that could have made things very uncomfortable for Argentina. Those misses need to be erased from the memory of the Canadians, as goals may well be tough to come by in this one.

If they do get chances in this game, they need to be a little more lethal in front of goal.

Probably the least surprising thing that came out of the opening set of games was that Peru failed to score one again. Peru has some serious issues in the offensive side of the game, so their 0-0 draw with Chile was not totally unexpected.

On the flipside, they are defensively sound, thanks in large part to a very physical approach to the game, making it very tough on the opposition. Given their struggles to score, going a goal down could prove to be a nightmare.

I think we can expect a tight game here decided by a single goal.

I was the ideal start to Copa America for defending champion, Argentina with a 2-0 win over Canada. While it’s always good to get things rolling with a victory, the scrutiny on this team is huge, with a lot of fans and pundits left unimpressed by the world champions.

At the end of the day, it’s all about winning, so Argentina will ignore the press and go out and try to lock up their spot in the next round with a win.

A point in the opening game is not the worst outcome for any team, and depending on what happens in the other game in this group, Chile could potentially still be alive even with a loss in this one, which seems like the most likely outcome.

Going back over the years, Chile have had very little success against Argentina, failing to win in their last 6 meetings against them You have to go back to 2016 to find the last time they beat the world champions, with that one coming in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw.

This should be another comfortable win for Argentina, who I believe will step up a gear in this one.
