UEFA Euro 2020 Betting Update – Round of 16: Spain Tops Croatia and France Falls

After Tuesday’s matches, we can officially claim EURO 2020 to be unpredictable. The pre-tournament favorite fell, causing an entire nation to gasp and cry in their wine. Also, a team that played less than stellar during the group stage came up with a second straight huge win. Let’s take a look at our Euro 2020 Betting Update so you can continue placing your bets against their Euro Cup odds.

UEFA Euro 2020 Round of 16 Update – Soccer Betting

UEFA EURO 2020

  • When: June 11 – July 11

Spain outlasts Croatia while Switzerland upsets France

Before discussing how the French bombed in their Round of 16 match against Switzerland, we should talk about how Spain has surged to EURO 2020 favoritism.

During group play, Spain struggled. The Spanish failed to score a goal in a 0-0 draw with Sweden. Then in their second group match, Spain drew again, this time 1-1 versus Poland.

The Spanish picked it up against Slovakia, though. Spain seemed to flip a switch in the 5-0 victory. Against Croatia in the Round of 16, Spain scored 5 goals again in a 5-3 win. In their last couple of matches, Spain has outscored their opponents a combined 10-3.

Spain’s quarterfinals match was supposed to be against the French. But the Swiss had other plans.

Switzerland outlasted France in a 3-3 thriller, knocking the defending FIFA World Cup Champions from the tournament via penalty kicks. In hindsight, France didn’t play well enough during the group stage to win the EURO 2020 trophy.

Germany scored an own goal and France drew with Hungary and Portugal. The French said they’ll keep Didier Deschamps as their coach and manger.

A lot can change from now until the World Cup in 2022, though. Don’t be surprised if the French manage a way for Deschamps to gracefully resign.

Final quarterfinals matchup to be determined after Tuesday’s matches

In the final Round of 16 matches, Germany takes on England and Sweden battles the Ukraine. Among the four participating squads, Sweden has shown the most consistency.

A Ukraine upset over Sweden doesn’t seem probable. If the Swedes beat the Ukrainians, they’ll have a shot against Germany or England. That’s how well Sweden has played since a 2-4 loss to France way back in a UEFA Nations League match last November.

If the Ukrainians upset Sweden, Germany or England looks solid for a semifinal berth.

Swiss take on Spain, Czechs versus Danes, and Belgium battles Italy in quarterfinals

The quarterfinal matches that are set look ultra-competitive. Spain won’t find it as easy to score 5 goals against the Swiss like they did versus the Slovakians and Croatians.

Also, 2 of Spain’s 5 goals versus Croatia happened in extra time. Denmark and the Czech Republic should be a classic.

The Danes dominated Wales 4-1. The Czech Republic took advantage of a 10-man Netherlands side for a 2-0 victory. The teams are similar which should make for a great match.

Belgium versus Italy will be a classic unless Belgian players Eden Hazard or Kevin De Bruyne, or both, can’t go. If Belgium is without Hazard but De Bruyne is one-hundred percent, the Belgians have an outside shot to upset the Italians.

But the Azzuri should roll if Belgium is without De Bruyne. Beating Russia with De Bruyne on the bench is one thing. Beating the most impressive squad at EURO 2020 without the best player in the world is another.
