The third round of the US Open kicks off Friday with early action beginning at 11 a.m. ET at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The first week of the tournament has already featured major upsets, particularly in the men’s draw, where top seeds Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Karen Khachanov, and Hubert Hurkacz are already eliminated.
The women’s draw hasn’t been as wild (as of Thursday afternoon, at least), but there have been a few notable upsets. Top-20 seeds Viktoria Azarenka, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Petra Kvitova, and Caroline Garcia all lost in the first two rounds.

Coco Gauff has been playing at an elite level in recent weeks, winning the Cincinnati Masters and looking poised and confident through her first two matches at the US Open. This could be the year she finally – despite still only being 19 years old – breaks through at a Grand Slam after several years of hype.
Mertens just scraped by both of her first two opponents – Mirjam Bjorklund and Danielle Collins – and shouldn’t present much of a challenge to Gauff.

Friday’s third-round match between Karolina Muchova and Taylor Townsend will be the first meeting between the two players. Muchova, the 2023 French Open runner-up, is looking in great form through her first two matches and previously reached the final at the Cincinnati Masters.
Townsend upset Haddad Maia in the second round but should have a much harder time beating Muchova. The world No. 132 is 17-13 this season but hasn’t beaten any opponents of note this season.

Frances Tiafoe, runner-up at the 2022 US Open, looks poised to make another deep run at this year’s event. He has a tall task ahead of him in French player Adrian Mannarino in the third round. Tiafoe won each of his first two matches in straight sets and has lost just 15 games thus far.
Mannarino, meanwhile, won both of his matches in four sets. Tiafoe and Mannarino have split their two career meetings but haven’t played since 2018 when Tiafoe beat Mannarino in the first round at the US Open. Expect a similar result on Friday.

Few people would have had either Zhizhen Zhang or Rinky Hijikata making the third round, but one will move on to the Round of 16 with a win on Friday. Zhang, the world No. 52, is playing the best tennis of his career after having secured wins over Ruud and American J.J. Wolf, both of which were in five sets.
Hijikata, a 22-year-old Australian, had a more favorable draw to the Round of 32 than Zhang but looked dominant in his last win, 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 against Marton Fucsovics. Hijikata has also been on court considerably less than Zhang and, at +126, is a great value bet to move on to the next round.
