This has been a very busy 10-day span for most of the MLS teams with games on both weekends plus 17 of the 28 teams entered the U.S. Open Cup with midweek games.

Now with the third round of the cup in the rearview mirror, the MLS teams can turn their attention back to league play. Two teams, San Jose Earthquakes, and D.C. United have fired coaches since Saturday, the first two changes of the MLS season.

All 28 teams will be in action this weekend, with ten games on Saturday and four on Sunday. Among the top matchups this weekend are a top-five matchup in both conferences and a tough challenge for first place Philadelphia Union on the road. Texas Derby With Meaning

The Texas teams all struggled last season, but now they occupy three of the top five spots in the Western Conference after the first seven games of the 2022 season. With the 2021 expansion side Austin FC surprising everyone in second place, FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo meet up this weekend. Both teams have 12 points with identical 3-1-3 records and ten goals scored in seven games.

FC Dallas is technically in fourth place with four goals allowed, while the Dynamo have allowed seven on the campaign. The road team in this rivalry hasn’t won since 2016, with eight draws and seven wins by the home team. On top of that, Houston hasn’t won in the last 11 trips to Dallas dating back to 2013.

Dallas is on their best run in four years with five straight unbeaten matches. Jesus Ferreira leads the team with five goals, while Brandon Servania has three assists. Jader Obrian is a player to watch as four of his ten career goals have come against Texas teams, including three in three matches against Houston.

Houston has also gone five straight without a loss after a 0-0 draw against Portland Timbers on Saturday. Veteran Darwin Quintero leads Houston with four goals, and the Dynamo have completed 84% of their passes on the season.

MyBookie has Dallas as a -121 home favorite, while the Dynamo are +350 to take all three points. A draw is listed at +260. The total goals is 2.5, with the over at -109 and the under at -115.

Red Bulls Aim to Extend Resurgence

It has been a fantastic start to the 2022 season for a New York Red Bulls team that has languished mid-table the last few seasons. They have ten goals in seven games with three wins and two losses. The 11 points have them in third place, and this weekend they can make a statement going up against second-place Orlando City SC.

New York swept Orlando City last year with 2-1 wins in both locations. That marked the first season sweep by either side since Orlando City entered the league. This season they have won their first three road games for the first time ever, and a win on Sunday in Florida will make them the first MLS team to win four straight road games to start a season since 1998.

The Lions have played one more game than the Red Bulls and have 14 points with four wins and two draws. Despite losing goal-scoring threats Nani, Chris Mueller, and Daryl Dike, Orlando City has ten goals in eight games and could end the weekend atop the Eastern Conference standings. They are excelling this year in the attacking third by drawing a MLS-best 28 fouls to set up free kicks, and no team has committed as many fouls as RBNY this season.

Orlando has put together a two-game win streak for the first time since October, and this marks just their second winning streak in the last 33 games. Junior Urso has two goals, while Facundo Torres has four assists for the Lions.

MyBookie has Orlando as a +130 home favorite to take all three points while the Red Bulls are +210. A draw is +225 with the total goals of 2.5 and the over at +100, the under at -130.

Union Look to Get Back on Track

The Philadelphia Union took their first loss of the season last weekend but remain in first place in the East with a MLS-best 16 points through seven games. With just four goals allowed, they have five wins and one draw while scoring 11 times. The Union have a tricky home matchup this weekend against CF Montreal, who sit in sixth place in the East with 10 points from seven games.

Montreal is a tough team to figure out so far this season. They lead the Eastern Conference in both goals scored (13) and goals allowed (16). They are also well-rested since the Canadian teams of the MLS don’t play in the U.S. Open Cup and their Canadian Championships aren’t until next month.

Montreal doesn’t have a shutout yet this season, and the only time they didn’t score was in a season-opening 2-0 loss at Orlando. They have scored at least two goals in four straight games, including a 4-3 thrilling win at FC Cincinnati.

Daniel Gazdag leads the Union with four goals on the season, while Kai Wagner has three goals. Djordje Mihailovic has done it all for Montreal, leading the team with four goals and three assists.

MyBookie has the Union as a big home favorite at -155. Montreal is +420 to take all three points, while a draw is +290. The total goals is 2.5, with the over at -125 and the under at -101.

Given the fact that FC scored at least three times in each of its victories, many think the guests have excellent chances of winning this event. Nashville isn’t that confident lately, which is a perfect situation for the black-and-gold to extend their positive streak.

The most interesting battle of the weekend, according to the pundits. Both teams are in terrible shape, yet they have high ambitions from this season, which puts them in a tough place, withstanding pressure from all sides.

LA didn’t win since the season started, posting four losses and three ties and allowing eight goals in the past three events, which all ended over 2.5 scores. Austin posted subsequent stalemates and defeats over the recent four contests, allowing five goals combined in two road events.

The team looks vulnerable in pretty much all the lines, and the head coach, Giovanni Savarese, needs to make radical changes. 

The guests aren’t confident on the road at all, having one tie and four losses so far, and FC should utilize this convenience. In four events at TQL, Cincinnati won in each, allowing just one goal, with three triumphs coming by the same result, 1-0.
