The USFL playoffs have an opportunity to mirror another spring professional football league, the XFL. On one side, the league has two teams playing in the South Division championship, the Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers, that had strong regular seasons. But in the North Division, there are a pair of 4-6 squads in, the Pittsburgh Maulers and Michigan Panthers getting ready to battle for a spot in the championship game.

By winning their last two games of the season, the Maulers ended up winning the regular season crown in the North Division. Pittsburgh did it by playing exceptional defense during the regular season, ranking first in the league in yards per game allowed (257.5), points per game (17.5), and passing yards per game (174.8). The Maulers especially tortured the Panthers’ offense.

Pittsburgh only allowed a single touchdown in both of its wins over Michigan. However, the Maulers may be seeing a different quarterback than they did the last time around when Pittsburgh intercepted Michigan quarterback Josh Love four times during a 19-7 win. The Panthers started E.J. Perry at quarterback last week.

Perry was serviceable last week in a season-saving win over Philadelphia. Perry passed for 121 yards in addition to making several big plays with his feet to rack up 48 rushing yards. Michigan also has a solid defense. The Maulers have a habit of settling for field goals on drives and will need to produce more turnovers to give their offense a better field position to work with.

Michigan’s offense still hasn’t improved much and won’t do enough to prevent Pittsburgh from reaching the title game.

New Orleans Breakers at Birmingham Stallions (-3.5)

The defending champion Stallions won their final five games of the season to win the South Division for the second straight season. The Stallions are the defending USFL champions and have rallied behind backup quarterback Alex McGough. McGough was able to settle into the offense and has passed for 2,105 yards this season.

The Stallions are averaging 28.7 points per game and have the top number of yards gained per game at 283.6 per game. Birmingham and New Orleans split their two meetings during the regular season. The Breakers’ offense is nearly as adept at scoring as the Stallions are.

Slippery Rock product Wes Hills was New Orleans’ top running back and among the league’s best rushers. Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson has looked comfortable under center after coming to the team from the Canadian Football League. The Breakers’ offense is second in the league by averaging 23.7 points per game. Of the two semifinals, this game will be more appealing to the eyes. This game has an over/under of 45.5 points. The total will find a way to go over the number.
