The Crimson Tide is the fifth consecutive ranked opponent for LSU, and they’ve gone 1-3 in their last four games, including a 31-17 defeat to Ole Miss before getting a week off in preparation for Alabama. After their only loss of the season to Texas A&M in a close 41-38 game on the road, the Tide have beaten Mississippi State 49-9 and outscored Tennessee 52-24. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules, and with all of the turmoil in the program, the team appears to be succumbing to the pressure as they’ve fallen to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the SEC. With Orgeron on his way out, it will be difficult for the coaching staff to maintain morale and step up against a desperate Alabama team.

The real issue on the field has been the Tigers’ defense, which is giving up over 400 total yards a game and 168 of those on the ground. Opponents are gaining an average of 4.5 yards per rushing attempt while failing to establish their own running game, gaining just 112 yards a game and only 3.5 yards per attempt.

Except for a late surge by Florida and a fourth-quarter letdown against Texas A&M, the Tide haven’t had much of a drop-off from last year’s national championship season. Quarterback Bryce Young is completing 70% of his passes and has thrown for 26 touchdowns with three interceptions.

Defensively, Alabama is giving up less than 90 rushing yards on the ground and 306 total yards per contest against a schedule that has included strong offensive teams like Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Although the toughest part of their slate may be behind them, the Tide needs to finish strongly to have a chance to face Georgia in the SEC Championship game.

For Alabama, they’ve inflicted some big losses on good teams, beating Mississippi State by 40 points, Ole Miss by 21, Tennessee by 28, and they opened the season with a 31 point victory over Miami. If the Tide can get on a roll as they did in 2020 in a 55-17 beat down of LSU, they could get a similar result this time around.
