Series History

It’s the first meeting of the season between the teams. Phoenix won all three last season and is on a nine-game winning streak against the Spurs. Three of the past six have been decided by five or fewer points. Suns forward Keita Bates-Diop played three seasons for the Spurs from 2020-23, averaging 6.8 points on 50.6 FG% and 3.4 rebounds in 156 games (56 starts).

The Spurs (1-2) played their first road game of the season on Sunday and got bombed 123-83 at the Clippers. LA raced out to a 20-7 lead to start the game. San Antonio responded with a 10-3 run to close out the quarter, trailing 23-27 going into the second. Los Angeles scored 30+ points in each of the next three quarters while holding the Spurs below 25.

San Antonio had 25 turnovers versus just 21 assists. Rookie star Victor Wembanyama played 26 minutes and had 11 points with five rebounds and one block. In addition to the low point total, the rookie was responsible for a game-high five turnovers.

The Clippers made it clear, right from the jump, that they would put a body on Wemby whenever the chance presented itself. This will be the norm this season by all teams: Press Wemby and see if he bends or breaks. The Spurs are using Zach Collins at center to reduce Wemby’s minutes against stronger players.

“That’s the biggest difference for him, all that physicality,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

Devin Vassell recorded a line of 14 points (6-of-10 FGs, 1-of-1 FTs), one rebound, one steal, and one 3-pointer. Keldon Johnson (5/5/1/1 with one 3-pointer) shot 1-of-9 from the field, while Jeremy Sochan had more turnovers (four) than points (zero). Johnson was a lot more effective in his previous two games, averaging 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists. The Spurs were blown out of Sunday’s game, so none of the starters cleared 28 minutes.

Johnson’s scoring has improved every season he has been in the NBA. He joins Kawhi Leonard, Vinny Del Negro and George Gervin as Spurs who improved by 2.0+ PPG in each of their first four seasons with the Spurs. Johnson and Leonard are the only two to improve by 3.0+ PPG each season.

The Spurs are 193-34 under Popovich when they dish out 30+ assists as a team. San Antonio is now 33-0 under Popovich when they record 35+ assists. Through three games, the Spurs are the fourth-worst rebounding team in the league, averaging only 41.7 per night. They are seventh-worst when it comes to scoring in the paint. On top of that, they allow the third-most rebounds out of any team and allow 62 points in the paint per game, second worst in the league. Wembanyama was advertised as an elite rim protector, and he has been but he seems to be the only one.

Why Bet on Phoenix?

The Suns (2-1) were 126-104 winners over Utah on Saturday even though Devin Booker (ankle) missed his second straight game and Bradley Beal (back) missed his third in a row. They are questionable for Tuesday. While with the Wizards last season, Beal averaged 23.3 points on a career-best 50.6 FG%, while also shooting 36.5 3FG% and 84.2 FT%. Beal was one of only five players in the league to average 20+ points on 50+ FG%, 35+ 3FG% and 80+ FT% for the season.

Kevin Durant had 26 points, seven assists and four rebounds in Saturday’s win. Durant had the best point differential on the team with plus-30 and scored 12 of his 26 points in the third quarter to help close out the game. He’s been the lone All-Star on Phoenix to play all three games this season.

“Perfect balance,” Suns coach Frank Vogel said of how Durant played. “First of all, every post double team that he gets, we should shoot wide-open 3s or get dunks on the back side, and we did a much better job with that. He did a phenomenal job early in the game facilitating for his teammates. And then everybody else gets involved, makes a couple shots and then they’re a little charged up more on the defensive end and he doesn’t have to do so much. I thought we all leaned on him too much in the Lakers game, and a far better result tonight.”

It helped Phoenix’s huge issue with turnovers two games in. The 39 turnovers in the first two were the most Phoenix had over any two-game stretch since March 2021, but the Suns cleaned that up with only 11 to go along with 31 assists on Saturday The Jazz, meanwhile, had 19 the Suns scored 30 points off of.

Grayson Allen finished with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals across 31 minutes. After combining for just six points in the first two games of the season, Allen was much more involved on the offensive side Saturday. Fourteen of his 17 points came in the third quarter, helping the Suns extend their lead to 28 heading into the final frame. Eric Gordon scored all 21 of his points in the first half while shooting 75 percent from the floor to help the Suns race out to a 16-point lead heading into halftime. He wasn’t as involved in the second half.

Durant is now averaging 27.7 points on 41.3 FG%, 8.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists through the first three games. He is 25 points shy of 27,000 for his career and 15 rebounds away from 7,000. Booker, who celebrated his 27th birthday on Monday, needs just 28 more points to pass Kevin Johnson for 3rd on the Suns all-time scoring list. Currently at 12,720 career points and 1,092 three-pointers, Booker became the first player in NBA history with 12,000+ career points and 1,000+ triples before turning 27, while his 12,720 points are the 10th most all-time before a 27th birthday.

New addition Eric Gordon has scored 46 points through the first three games of this season, the ninth time in his career he’s scored 45+ points in the first three games of a season and the first time since 2020-21. Saturday night’s game marked the 38th time in franchise history the Suns have shot 50+ FG% and 90+ FT%, while also making at least 10 three-pointers, moving to 31-7 all-time in such games.
