TCU Horned Frogs 2023 Football Season Betting Guide

Written by on June 5, 2023

The TCU Horned Frogs face an impossible challenge this year. TCU had its best season since it was named the National Champions by the Associated Press in 1938, finishing 13-2 and earning a spot in the College Football Playoff Championship game last season. Now, second-year Sonny Dykes will have to try and duplicate his breakthrough success from his first season.

Let’s see if the TCU Horned Frogs have what it takes to back the betting lines to win the National Championship.

How to Replace Max Duggan

TCU graduate Max Duggan went from backup quarterback to Heisman Trophy finalist last season. Duggan took over after Chandler Morris sprained his knee in the season opener against Colorado. Morris stayed with the program and is likely to be the starter. However, Morris will have competition.

TCU convinced former Oregon State starter Chance Nolan to join the program. Nolan has 20 starts under his belt over the past three seasons. During the 2021 season, Nolan threw for 2,677 yards and 19 touchdowns. Duggan passed for over 3,000 yards and 32 touchdowns last season. Whoever takes over at quarterback will have to be able to keep up with Dykes’ offense. Scoring is a must to keep up in today’s Big 12.

TCU has Modest Expectations

The Horned Frogs aren’t expected to approach last season’s success. TCU is +7500 to win the national championship and has an over/under of 7.5 for its win total.

Derailing Deion’s Hype Train

TCU has an interesting challenge on paper to start the 2023 season. The Horned Frogs will host a totally new-look Colorado Buffaloes program, led by first-year coach Deion Sanders. Sanders made waves in the offseason by overhauling the program totally from top to bottom.

Colorado likely won’t pose much of a challenge for the Horned Frogs, but it TCU’s offense sputters with a new quarterback, they could find themselves in a dogfight.

Road Games Aren’t Too Daunting

The Horned Frogs will have Big 12 road trips to Houston, Iowa State, Kansas State, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. The Wildcats were the only conference foe to beat TCU last season and that defeat came in the conference title game. The trip to Oklahoma to end the season will be interesting as the Sooners struggled in their first season under Brent Venables last season.

Home Games Feature Chances to Grab Victories

The Horned Frogs will play Colorado, Nicholls State, SMU, West Virginia, BYU, Texas, and Baylor at home this season. TCU has made a habit of giving traditional power Texas a hard time. Since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12, TCU has beaten Texas in eight of the last 11 meetings between the two programs.

Four of the Horned Frogs’ first five games will be at home.

A Last Chance for Glory before Realignment Disaster

Oklahoma and Texas will exit the Big 12 after this season. TCU has been a major player in keeping up the standard of the conference since Colorado, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Missouri abandoned ship over a decade ago. The Horned Frogs will struggle to replicate last year’s success, but should be able to get over its win total thanks to a soft non-conference schedule.
