Unlike the Kentucky Derby, players don’t bet on the Belmont Stakes early. This year, especially because it’s likely to rain on Saturday, horseplayers won’t choose their Belmont winner until race day. So instead of talking about final Belmont Stakes odds, this blog will predict which horse goes off the favorite, what the morning line chalk’s odds will be at race time, and which horse will offer the highest odds to win the Test of Champions.

Which horse will go off the favorite to win the Belmont Stakes?
This is a tougher question than many believe. We the People’s trainer, Rodolph Brissett wins graded stakes races at a 7% clip.
That’s far below Todd Pletcher’s graded stakes winning percentage. Pletcher has two horses in this, Nest and Mo Donegal. Mo is the second choice.
So although We the People has a pace edge and is the morning line chalk, Mo Donegal, will go off the chalk.
What will We the People’s odds be before they break from the gate?
If Big Sandy comes up wet, and the stewards tell the grounds team to seal the track, We the People could go off at his 2-1 morning line because speed prevails on a sealed racetrack.
But if the day is sunny and the track remains fast, We the People could go off 3-1 as the second or third choice. Speed players will be all over We the People.
But class players, and those who use trainer angles to pick winners, will go against the morning line chalk in favor of Rich Strike, the Kentucky Derby winner, or Mo Donegal.
What will Rich Strike’s odds right before the gates open?
Rich Strike’s morning line is 7-2 or +350. The Kentucky Derby winner should go off around the morning line. He may offer 5-2 or +250.
The speed horseplayers will turn their backs on Rich Strike. But those who have the false impression that closers have an advantage the longer the race will be all over Rich.
So Rich Strike should maintain close to his morning line. If he drifts past 7-2, consider the Derby winner an overlay. Rich is a proven commodity and has been training lights out.
Which horse will offer the highest odds to win the Belmont Stakes?
Golden Glider is bred to handle the 1 ½ mile distance. But Skippylongstocking ran in the Preakness Stakes.
Skippy is the known horse. So he will attract more action than Golden Glider, which means the Mark Casse trained runner, that’s Golden Glider, goes off at higher odds than Skippylongstocking.
Here’s a tip if you’re debating between the two. Skippy did run well in the Preakness, yes, but he should want no part of 1 ½ miles.
Glider ran his eyeballs out to finish second behind We the People in the Peter Pan. He had no shot of catching We the People, but he didn’t quit.
Not only that, but Casse believes enough in him to run in the Belmont. Maybe, Mark has faith because Glider has improved in every race. So if you’re deciding between Glider and Skippy, Golden Glider is the better play of the two 20-1 shots.
