Kentucky Derby Thursday Complete Run Down of the Field
The Kentucky Derby field for this year’s Run for the Roses suggests a highly-competitive event. Horses like Hit Show and Verifying offer much higher odds than they should. Check out Kentucky Derby betting lines and information for every participant at the 2023 Derby.

149th Kentucky Derby | Grade I stakes race
When: Saturday, May 6, 2023
Where: Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY
Distance & Surface: 1 ¼ miles on dirt
1. Hit Show | 3000
The Brad Cox trained runner shouldn’t offer anything close to 30-to-1 odds. Hit Show has a single off the board finish, and it was a fourth. The Candy Ride sired runner shows excellent works and is a legit overlay underdog choice.
2. Verifying | 1500
Like Hit Show, Verifying calls Brad Cox his trainer. This equine almost upset Tapit Trice in the Bluegrass Stakes. So why are Verifying’s odds at +1500 and Trice’s at +500? Another overlay with a shot.
3. Two Phil’s | 1200
Two Phil’s produced the race’s highest last out Brisnet speed rating. If the tapeta form in the Jack Ruby translates to dirt, watch out.
4. Confidence Game | 2000
The Grade 2 Rebel victory was nice, but that was in February. It’s tough to win the Derby off a layoff, which means not running in March and April will be an issue.
5. Tapit Trice | 500
Sired by Tapit, the Todd Pletcher trained Bluegrass Stakes winner isn’t just good enough to win the roses, but is also good enough to win the Triple Crown.
6. Kingsbarns | 1200
Horses that prep in the Louisiana Derby don’t often win the Kentucky Derby. However, Kingsbarns is undefeated and has shown an ability to win from off the pace or win on the front end.
7. Reincarnate | 5000
The Tim Yakteen trained runner faded in the Arkansas Derby. Reincarnate ran close to the pace, though. The work on April 28 is magnificent. Consider using on the bottom of your exotic tickets.
8. Mage | 1500
Mage closed fast in the Florida Derby to lose to Forte by a length. In a longer a race, Mage would have gotten to Forte. Here’s another offering an overlay morning line with a shot.
9. Skinner | 2000
In 2005, John Shirreffs saddled Giacomo to a stunning Kentucky Derby victory. The horse got help because Afleet Alex, which won the Preakness and Belmont that year, ran up a dead rail. Skinner is a better horse than Giacomo. This one has a big shot to at least get a piece.
10. Practical Move | 1000
The Santa Anita Derby winner is all heart but this guy was all out to win the SA Derby. It’s difficult seeing Practical Move getting the 1 ¼ mile distance.
11. Disarm | 3000
If not for Steve Asmussen and Joel Rosario, this one would show a | 5000 morning line. Can Disarm win the Derby. It’s possible. But the race would have have to fall apart ala Rich Strike’s rail running victory last year.
12. Jace’s Road | 5000
We can’t know for sure, but Brad Cox may be saddling this one to set it up for his best horse, Angel of Empire. Jace’s Road projects to pressure Verifying, Derma Sotogake, and Kingsbarns on the front end. If that’s the plan, Jace won’t hit the board.
13. Sun Thunder | 5000
Trainer Kenny McPeek is putting blinkers on for the first time. Sign of desperation? Yes, because Kenny only wins 10% with first-time blinkers.
14. Angel of Empire | 800
Like Tapit Trice, Angel of Empire can win the Triple Crown. The Classic Empire sired runner has light speed ratings but that’s because he cruises up to the front runners, no matter the pace, and then explodes past them. If required, Angel can sustain his closing kick for at least a mile.
15. Forte | 300
Much respect to the chalk, but, man, those last two works are breathtakingly awful: 5 furlongs in 1:02 and 4 furlongs in 49.4. Must pass.
16. Raise Cain | 5000
Raise Cain would have to pull a Rich Strike. It’s not impossible. But it’s also not likely that lightning strikes twice and others with similar odds have better chances.
17. Derma Sotogake | 1000
Derma is the third horse running in this year’s Kentucky Derby that can win the Triple Crown. Neo Universe, Derma’s grandsire on the broodmare side, finished fourth in the Grade 1 Japan Cup at 1 ½ miles on the grass, which explains where Derma gets the stamina. Sire Mind Your Biscuits was fantastic at up to a mile. This year’s UAE Derby winner is for real.
18. Rocket Can | 3000
Ran one-paced in the Arkansas Derby, but Bill Mott is one of the greatest trainers of all time. So if anybody could get this one ready, Bill can. Consider for the bottom of your exotics.
19. Lord Miles | 3000
We can make a case for the Wood Memorial winner. The Wood was the first time Lord Miles ran for Saffie Joseph Jr., one of the most underrated trainers in North America. Saffie, for sure, is going to get this one to improve on Saturday.
20. Continuar | 5000
Lost by 10 lengths to Derma Sotogake in the UAE Derby. Derma, though, might be a monster and this one finished third. For sure, Continuar can hit the board and if the extra eighth of a mile in this works on Derma, who knows? Maybe, Continuar pulls the Rich Strike performance this year.
