Top Stakes Races of the Week

  • When: Sunday, May 29 – Monday, May 30

Belmont Park – Sunday, May 29

  • Grade 3 Soaring Softly – 7 furlongs dirt – 3 year old fillies

Expect at least nine runners for the Soaring Softly. Claude “Shug” McGaughey trained Skims should go off first or second choice along with Derrynane from the Cristophe Clement barn. Connections for Sail By, Lost My Sock, Wonka, Champagne Poetry, Ouraika, Breeze Easy, and Chardy Party are also pointing to this event.

Santa Anita Park – Sunday, May 29

  • Grade 3 Honeymoon Stakes – 1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year old fillies

Like the Soring Softly, the Grade 3 Honeymoon should attract at least nine runners. It’s going to be difficult for horseplayers to decide which one to back to win. Cairo Memories, Helens Well, Ellamira, Sterling Crest, Ballet Dancing, and Island Of Love are all win contenders. My Philly Twirl, Golden Dragon Queen, and Rhea Moon aren’t out of it.

  • Grade 2 Triple Bend – 7 furlongs dirt – 4 years old and up

Six talented sprinters are confirmed for the 7 furlong Triple Bend. Among the six, Kona Gold Stakes winner Brickyard Ride will go off the chalk. American Theorem, Elector, and Principe Carlo have a shot to upset Brickyard. Exaulted and Shaaz will also run.

Santa Anita Park – Monday, May 30

  • Grade 1 Gamely Stakes – 1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year old fillies and up

Grade 2 Royale Heroine winner Going Global could offer even money to win the Gamely. If you’re looking to beat the favorite, consider backing Going to Vegas, the second-place finisher in the Grade 3 Santa Anita Stakes. Eddie’s New Dream, Avenue de France, England’s Rose, Canoodling, Amy C, and Ocean Road should battle for third place honors.

  • Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile – 1 mile turf – 3 year olds and up

Santa Anita expects a full field of twelve to contest the 1 mile in the Grade 1 Shoemaker. Among the 12, half the field should have a chance to grab the win money: Beyond Brilliant, Restrainedvengeance, Masteroffoxhounds, probable chalk Smooth Like Strait, Get Her Number, and Count Again.

Connections for Greydar, Hong Kong Harry, Whisper Not, Gold Phoenix, Ecrivain, and Heywood’s Beach also plan to run.

  • Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita – 1 ¼ miles dirt – 3 year olds and up

For decades, Hollywood Park ran the Gold Cup. When Holly Park ran the GC, they called it the Hollywood Gold Cup. Since moving to Santa Anita, it’s now just the Gold Cup at Santa Anita.

Local handicap horses Express Train and Stilleto Boy will resume their rivalry. Michal Stidham trained Proxy and Dynamic One from the Todd Pletcher barn could have say. Royal Ship, Defunded, and Spielberg should also race.
