2021 Top Stakes Races to Bet On From Nov. 13th to 14th

2021 Top Stakes Races to Bet On From Nov. 13th to 14th

The thoroughbred industry doesn’t run many graded races the weekend after Breeders’ Cup. The only graded race happening this weekend is a good one, the Grade 3 Bob Hope at Del Mar. But just because there’s a single graded race, it doesn’t mean there is no stakes action happening over the weekend. Aqueduct starts their late fall and winter meet. On Saturday, the Big A runs the Artie Schiller Stakes. Then on Sunday, it’s the Winter Memories.

Top Stakes Races for the Week

  • When: Saturday, Nov. 13 – Sunday, Nov. 14

Laurel Racetrack – Saturday, Nov. 13

  • Safely Kept Stakes – 7 furlongs dirt – $100,000

The Safely Kept should be one of the most competitive stakes races of the weekend. In 2020, Hello Beautiful won the Safely Kept. Hello Beautiful won the Maryland Million Distaff in October this year, which gives us a clue as to the quality runners we should expect to enter this event.

  • Richard W. Small Stakes – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $100,000

The last three winners of the Richard W. Small Stakes have been high-quality equines. Unbridled Juan took home the trophy in 2018. In 2019, top non-graded stakes runner Sunny Ridge won the Richard Small then Harper’s First Ride took first-place honors in 2020 followed by Cordmaker in second. Do your homework before deciding who to back to win the Richard W. Small Stakes on Saturday.

Aqueduct Racetrack – Saturday, Nov. 13

  • Artie Schiller Stakes – 1 mile turf – $150,000

Named after 2005 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller, Aqueduct’s feature on Nov. 13 could produce a similar finish to last year’s event. Therapist beat Valid Point with Delaware coming in third. All three remain active and all three are trained by top horsemen. Todd Pletcher puts the saddle on Therapist, Valid Point goes for Graham Motion, and Chad Brown trains Delaware.

Del Mar Racetrack – Saturday, Nov. 13

  • Desi Arnaz Stakes – 7 furlongs dirt – $100,000

Ten runners are pointing to the Desi Arnaz Stakes at Del Mar. Bob Baffert, who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with Corniche this past Friday, plans on entering four, including Anoakia Stakes winner Eda and highly regarded Benedict Canyon. Plenty of last out maiden winners figure to enter. So do your homework before settling on your key horse.

Aqueduct Racetrack – Sunday, Nov. 14

  • Winter Memories Stakes – 1 1/16 miles turf – $150,000

Some serious racehorses have won the Winter Memories Stakes. 2019 saw Feel Glorious cross the finish line ahead of Sorrentina Lemon. Then last year, Duopoly beat High Opinion and Vigilante’s Way. All three remain active and all three are in decent form. Don’t be surprised if the three finishers from 2020 show up in Sunday’s race.

Del Mar Racetrack – Sunday, Nov. 14

  • Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes – 7 furlongs dirt – $100,000

Nine runners are pointing to the weekend’s lone graded race. Baffert will saddle four. Three are last out maiden winners: Kamui, Messier, and Winning Map. Montebello finished second to Senbei in the Funny Cide and second to Enbarr in the Capote Stakes. Walther Solis trained Rock N Rye is in decent form with a couple of wins and two second-place finishes in the last four starts. Make sure not to settle for a short price because the Bob Hope Stakes is wide open.
