Keeneland runs the final Kentucky Derby prep race of the year on Saturday when 3 year olds step onto the dirt to take part in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes. Before the Lexington on Saturday, Keeneland runs the Grade 1 Makers Mark Mile on Friday.

Maker’s Mark Mile | Grade 1

Distance: 1 mile turf – 4 year olds & up

The Maker’s Mark Mile is one of the year’s top mile turf races. This year, only five runners have committed to going in the MMM. One of the reasons for the lack of contenders could be because Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Modern Games has entered.

Connections for Chez Pierre, Dr. Zempf, Speaking Scout, and In Love aren’t afraid to take on the champ. Of the four, Dr. Zempf arrives from Chad Brown’s barn. The last out allowance winner takes a massive step up in class, but Brown is a master grass trainer.

The Lexington is the final chance for 3 year olds to secure a Kentucky Derby starting spot. No doubt, Keith Desormeaux trained Confidence Game will go off the favorite. The Grade 2 Rebel winner should be tough to beat.

Brad Cox trained Victory Formation bombed in the Risen Star in the last. Before the ninth place finish, the Cox runner had won three straight. Others expected to enter include Curly Larry and Mo, Street Sense sired last out maiden winner First Mission, and Midnight Rising.

At least six runners should break from the gate in the Jenny Wiley Stakes. Chad Brown trained In Italian will be the morning line chalk. The speedy 5-year-old finished second behind Tuesday in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf in her last.

Charles Appleby trained With The Moonlight should have a chance. Others joining the fray include New Year’s Eve, Skims, Didia, and Freedom Speaks.
