Who has been the best player in the NBA up to this point in the season? That is a question that is very much open for debate, although there are some metrics that we can use to get a clearer answer. One of the best of those is to go directly to the NBA to take a look at their Kia MVP ladder, where they do a fabulous job of breaking it all down to deliver the players who are making the biggest impact on the season. Much like college rankings, these types of lists are purely subjective and open to debate, but it is hard to argue that the players who are among the top right now do not deserve to be there. Let’s take a quick look at 4 players who can claim to be the best of the regular season up until now so you can continue betting against their NBA odds.
Best 2021 NBA Regular Season Players Up Until Now
One player alone cannot carry a team to a championship, but Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers is certainly doing his part to get his team closer to that goal. The 76ers are sitting atop the Eastern Conference standings as we speak and the stats that Embiid is putting up is a big part of that success. He is already averaging over 30 PPG, but that average is on the rise, as he has now scored 40+ points in 2 of his last 3 games. Embiid has put this team on his shoulders and is making them look like a legitimate championship team. If the season ended today, it would be hard to argue against him being the league MVP.
The Denver Nuggets are down in the #5 spot in the Western Conference, but they have been on a run of form that has seen them heading in the right direction, winning 7 of their last 10 games. At the heart of this return to form for the Nuggets has been Nikola Jokic, who is averaging around 27 PPG, as well as delivering 11 assists per game and just shy of 9 rebounds per game. Given those stats, it should come as no surprise that Jokic has already delivered 9 triple-doubles this season. When the Nuggets end up may have an impact on his ability to win the MVP.
The proof that one player cannot completely carry a team can be seen in LA right now, with the Lakers struggling to pick up wins with Anthony Davis on the sideline. That said, LeBron James is delivering another great season as he tries to help keep the Lakers within reach of the Utah Jazz at the top of the Western Conference. His stock has fallen a little during the run without Davis, but he is being asked to do a lot, which is not easy for a guy who is 36 years old.
Lillard is another player that seems to be upping his game as we head into the second half of the season, averaging a couple more PPG over the past 4 games of the season than he has posted to this point. Like Jokic, Lillard might not necessarily get a look as the league MVP unless the Trail Blazers make a big move over the next couple of months.
